Product Description

Product Description

An important part of pastoral ministry for many clergy is conducting funerals for families who have had little or no contact with the church, sometimes in circumstances involving suicide, death of a baby or child, or even murder. This book has been written with the aim of drawing the bereaved family as far as possible into the preparation of the funeral, and contains services for various occasions combined with resources material of readings, prayers and suggestions of appropriate music.

About the Author

The Revd Fraser Smith is a Methodist minister and chaplain to a top security prison in Lancashire. Educated at London and Cambridge universities, most of his church appointments over the last thirty years have been in town centre and inner-city areas. He has been much involved in counselling the dying and bereaved, and it was in relation to this aspect of his ministry that he wrote Life after Life: Readings to Comfort the Bereaved which we published in 1993 and reissued in 2000.

As one who conducts funerals on a regular basis I have found this book to be an invaluable resource.
It offers a framework for 5 types of funerals - a basic Christian funeral, the funeral of a baby or child, the funeral of a young person who died tragically, the funeral of someone who has committed suicide and the funeral of one who has little or no faith. It also contains poems, readings and prayers along with suggestions for hymns, songs and music.
Whilst I haven't used the draft services for any funeral I've conducted, they have offered a very useful starting point. The book has been helpful to have with me on funeral visits, not least because of the variety of poems and readings it contains.
All in all its an excellent resource and I highly recommend it.
