the deftones second outing gave us a darker and more original look at nu metal. both albums are equal, but those who prefer a diverse, haunting collage of heavy tracks (like me) will prefer this short and sweet gem. The best tracks are the two singles and dai the flu. my own summer is the best song to be played at full volume, an incredibly catchy and amazing guitar riff, a beatifully screamed chorus and wonderfully original lyrics. be quiet and drive is (in my opinion) the best deftones song because the vocals bring out the diversity of chino's voice, and the song has a repeated riff that drives the song forward backed up by thumping bass from chi cheng. dai the flu has a furiously catchy and dark tune which runs through the versus, perfecty complimenting such a song. max from sepultura and soulfly joins the party in the song 'headup' adding a more traditional metal feel to the album, followed by a great closure from mx, and the hidden track. However, every track is good, most are excellant and the album is definately worth getting before all others if you're into more original metal.

With their second album, the Deftones have exceeded all expectations to deliver one of the best metal albums of the 1990s. After bursting on the scene with the brutal if slightly rushed 'Adrenaline', 'Around The Fur' successfully combine haunting and melodic vocals with aggressive and raging guitars. From the outstanding opening track 'My Own Summer' to album closer 'MX' with its edgy and subdued feeling, the album does not have a single filler track. Highlights are many especially 'Be Quiet And Drive (Far Away)' which could be the best song the Deftones have recorded so far. The title track itself would put most bands in the "post-Korn" metal scene to shame and 'Lotion' is destined to become a live favourite for years to come. What sets the band apart from the numerous US metal bands at the moment is the songs are not one-dimensional work-outs, going from emotional vocals to cutting edge guitars without breaking sweat. 'Around The Fur' is brutal, raw and aggressive, but at the same time opens up its soul and displays intelligence.

..ATF is an album i was introduced to during my mid-teens, and still it is as magnificent to listen to now as it was then. Possibly the best 'all round' deftones record. there is a change of tone from adrenaline, the guitars are less 'tinny' and sound far heavier, yet chino's voice reaches new, wonderous heights, which were merely suggested at with their previous record 'adrenaline'. The album contains some of the most emotional, desperate musical moments ive ever heard - deftones are possibly the only band out at the moment to successfully bridge the gap between metal and post rock - this is far more prominent in their later work ('white pony' and 'deftones') but this album is very suggestive of the dramatic, climactic angle of many post-rock bands. To me every track is fantastic but highlights include - Around the fur, Mascara, Be Quiet and Drive and MX. - a record that has, and will continue to alter the future of music.

Deftones best
So far none of the four albums released by Deftones have compared to Around the Fur. Chino's lyrics get darker but the band sounds alot more mature than on Adrenaline. Read more

Quite simply, this album carries on where adrenaline left off, but takes the 'tones sound to a new level. The melodies are better, the lyrics are more acclomplished. Read more
