About the Author

From the moment he first stood on the cramped concrete terraces of the latter half of the 1970's, Chris Nelson has been hooked on the beautiful game. He has followed his hometown team through a landscape of dizzying highs and crushing lows, see them slay mighty giants and watched them vanquished by plucky minnows. His journey has taken him from title wins through to relegations and from heady European adventures to the depths of administration. It has not always been easy following a team with a propensity for snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, but as any long suffering fan knows, when you pick a team, it's for life - not just for Christmas. Chris Nelson is an adventure travel writer and co-author of Footprint's Surfing Britain and Ireland, Surfing Europe and Surfing the World. For Around the Grounds he has brought together the experience, knowledge and passion of club members, forum moderators, bloggers, fanzine editors and fans from the length and breadth of the UK to make this a true fans guide to English football.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for all fans! 23 Aug 2010
Format:Paperback
I bought this at the start of the season as my team has moved up a league and I wanted to know a bit more about the new teams we'd be playing - all I can say is brilliant! I expected a slightly work-a-day guide to grounds and clubs but this book is a real gem. The writing is informed, clever, funny, and spot on, there are some amazing photos (like the one of Pele playing at Hillsborough!) the stories are interesting and you get a real feel for each club and its history. I obviously turned to my club first and found there was contributions and stories from our websites and fanzines. I also liked the Tales from the Terraces bit in the middle. A real cross section of English football from the big clubs down to the small. There's also practical info about the ground, where to go for a beer or food and how to get there. 10/10 A cracking book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Football Book of the Year 26 Aug 2010
By D-Side
Format:Paperback
While some football books are so sterile they manage to wring the passion out of the game and have left me bored to tears, finally here is a book that writes about the clubs with passion, knowledge, humour and enthusiasm. Sure there's all the ground info you'd expect and want but taking centre stage is a narrative about each club, summing up just what makes them tick - some poignant, some funny - backed up by a great mix of vintage archive and current shots. One of the things that really makes the book for me is the fans input on great snippets like the clubs most hated villains, greatest heroes as well as best and worst moments for the clubs - some classic rants in there! Ticks the box for everyone from the armchair know-it-alls to terrace regulars.

By Shanti
Format:Paperback
Bought this for my teenage son for the start of the new Championship season and it kicked off as well as we did...winning!. Playing away on our first game we had a 4 hour drive so he we spent the drive devouring the content and then enlightening us all with some funny, heartfelt, strange fan stories form around the grounds, especially some little tit bits for winding up the opposition fans. Brilliant!
