Simon Standage and Micaela Comberti have worked together as first and second violinist since the original-instrument movement began in Europe in the 1980s. These two have mastered appropriate intimacy in their musical performances, and every nuance is calculated, whether as studied improvisation or rehearsed effort.
These Arne Sonatas are light in content, and should be enjoyable to a wide audience. Collegium Musicum 90's other performers turn in polished performances in the continuo part.
A fine CD for the novice listener, and one also deserving of audition by more seasoned ears.

Format: Audio CD
This is a very enjoyable disc of Arne's chamber music, which was wholly new to me. I have always associated Arne with competent, slightly bombastic theatre music, largely on the strength of Rule, Britannia. I have been very unfair to the man; these are very good trio sonatas, full of variety and interest and with a real range of feeling. As well as plenty of poise, elegance and verve, some movements are genuinely beautiful and affecting and as a complete disc it is a very enjoyable and engaging programme.

A good deal of the credit for this must go to the excellent quartet of musicians. They invest Arne's music with genuine feeling and bring out all it's fine qualities. They plainly enjoy both the music and playing together and this, combined with excellent musicianship, produces some lovely chamber playing.

The recorded sound is excellent - clear and warm - and the packaging attractive. This disc is thoroughly enjoyable all round and while it's not truly great music it is extremely rewarding, very well played and deserves a much wider audience. Warmly recommended.
