ARMY OF TWO is a third-person shooter that features you controlling either Rios or Salem (with either you or the computer controlling the other), who are mercenaries who are sent on missions to war-torn places such as Iraq and Afghanistan, and you must use teamwork in a way that is done quite differently to other games in the genre.

The key to all of the teamwork is the Aggro meter, which swings between you and your partner depending on how much you shoot, throw grenades etc; the idea is that you can gain Aggro so that you can coax the enemy into attacking you while your partner sneaks around and attacks them while they're trained on you. Alternatively, you can get them to similarly distract the enemy and you flank them (in fact, some foes can only be harmed from behind, so this approach is valuable).

Other teamwork involvement includes the step-jump, which allows you to boost your partner up to a higher level (but you can also shoot baddies before launching yourself up there yourself if necessary) before they put their arm down to grab you. Either that, or you can get them to initiate the step-jump and go up to the higher ledge (but remember to pull up your partner!).

The other teamwork thing of note is the ability to snipe two targets simultaneously using the Co-Op Snipe option (in one-player mode your partner shoots almost immediately after you do, while in two-player you press A to initiatiate a countdown from three to one, so that you can synchronise your shots), or you can even swap guns with each other (you both have a primary weapon, a secondary weapon and a special weapon, as well as grenades).

4.0 out of 5 stars Close to Gears, but no cigar 7 Mar 2008
By Spooked
Platform for Display:Xbox 360
Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
Set in a future where private armies are undermining government military, blah, blah...hell, it's a shooter. And it's for two people. And they swear and high-five each other when whacking the enemy. What's not to like? Fire at the enemy melts, get your aggro meter glowing and all guns will be trained on you. Leaving your buddy free to sneak up and shoot them in the back of the head like the dogs they are. Controls easy (nice touch is tapping Y button to baseball slide into cover). Being a co-op, playing the campaign alone means trusting the AI, which in the main is pretty good. Simple shoulder and d-pad clicks send out orrders, and if you're taking too much heat, you can tell your guy to get all medieval on the enemy ass, and he'll draw fire while you recover. Follow set objectives to gain cash (which you can also bump up completing side missions and searching for level bonuses) which you can they spend, spend, spend on new weapons and upgrades (excellent touch) as well as blinging the sh*t out of your guns. Enemies can't help but pay attention to a diamond-studded missile launcher or solid gold AK47. You can also purchase body armour upgrades and menacing steel face masks. Nice.

Gameplay is intuitive, menus really smart and clear. First level tutors you through the various player controls, and hints pop up in the early stages. Characters are meaty, dialogue suitably rough, tough, rude and funny, enemies aggressive and locations well drawn (apart from the odd texture rip). Sound, including score, dialogue and weapons, score a big fat 10. Problems? Not many. Given the release date fell back by several months, the gameplay doesn't feel quite as polished as it should.

3.0 out of 5 stars Beware E A haven't told us everything 11 Mar 2008

This is a nice "fill in" game while we await the next big title. Its a bit of fun with a friend online - but only if that friend is in the EU aswell !!
I got this game to play with not only a friend from Sweden but also a couple of friends from across the pond.
But OH NO you cannot do that - thats why when you see a European gamer online with this game it says "Army of Two EU ".
EA should have made us aware of this fact - very underhanded I say.

5.0 out of 5 stars Review of Two 31 July 2009
By Richard

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Whether you're playing alone or ripping it up on split-screen co-op, Army of Two will leave you craving for more - and at Amazons price of £10.99 this game is a must-have for anyone wanting a game that clearly has quality to it.

Straight off the bat - this game is really, really good. The characters are believable, the dialogue is well thought out (no cheesy one liners here!) and the game play is fairly solid.

Pro's:
- Impressive graphics
- Good enemy A.I. (so long as you play on normal difficulty or higher)
- Clear storyline. Great characters. (complete with great cut-scenes)
- Great Co-Op shoot 'em up.
- Moderately easy to gain achievement points.
- Original and fun ideas for Xbox Live play.
- Re-playability
- 2 content downloads - one is FREE and adds 2 extra levels to the game.

Con's:
- Some levels have annoying bits of clipping which can make some enemies frustrating.
- Xbox Live ranked matches can be few and far between.
- Story can seem somewhat short for obsessive gamers.

Conclusion:
I gave this game 5 out of 5 simply because I could only really find one fault with the game that I felt could affect someone buying it and that is the fact that Xbox Live gamers might find the online matches sporadic (unless you have 3 other friends who own the game). This has not affected the 5 stars I have given this game simply because it does not best reflect how good the quality of the game is.

I would definitely recommend this game. I love it! With a sequel on the way, there's a lot of promise in a good series of games here and if you're in need of an extra online gamer for Army of Two, count me in! (Gamertag: CyberChristFF)
