More About the Author

My name is Richard McMunn and I started the 'how2become' series of books back in 2005 when I was working as a Firefighter for Kent Fire & Rescue Service. I initially started selling the books through my website http://www.how2become.com but soon expanded the range on Amazon.

Before joining the Fire Service I spent 4 years in the Fleet Air Arm on-board HMS Invincible. During my career I was heavily involved in recruitment and regularly sat on interview panels in addition to creating recruitment tests and scoring application forms and CV's.

Many of my books not only include details of how to pass a selection process, but I also provide sample responses to the application form questions and also the interview questions. I have helped hundred's of people to secure a job and I believe I can help you to do the same.

My books are created from a desire to help people achieve their goals and I am sure you will find my books inspiring and motivational.

I hope you enjoy my books,

Richard McMunn

2.0 out of 5 stars think twice before buying this 2 Mar 2011
By samo_10
Format:Paperback
There are a number of reasons why I was disappointed in this book.
First off, if you are seriously considering becoming an army officer, then much of the contents of this book will be old news already.
Secondly, the "inside knowledge" scoring criteria is again pretty patronizing towards the serious AOSB candidate, and seems to rely more on definitions of words such as "Determination" and "Influencing". I certainly didn't learn anything useful from that section.
Thirdly, a large part of the book is dedicated to passing your initial Army Careers Advisor interview, which the author himself notes is very easy. In my experience it was barely an interview at all, rather a meeting to register your interest and to set the ball rolling in terms of regimental visits and GP medicals etc prior to getting your briefing date.
Lastly, and most annoyingly, the editing of the book is atrocious. There are numerous simple spelling mistakes and grammatical error, such as the use of "what" instead of "was". I a more heinous error, the author actually refers to the Royal Navy instead of the Army!!!!
I grudgingly give it two stars however. This is because the numerical and pan ex tests and examples provided were useful. But examples and tests of this kind are readily available online.
I guess the book could be aimed at the ages of 16-18, i.e. school children, but then it should mention this in the description. All in all, disappointing.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not worth while 1 July 2012
By Jon
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Having passed both AOSB Briefing and Main Board and am now at Sandhurst I can comment on how useful this book is. I found for a quick heads up on what to expect it is slightly useful, as for anything more than this it isn't worth the money and if anything, distracts you from what you should be preparing. It is written by a man who has neither been through officer selection or has ever served as an officer. My best advice for anyone attempting AOSB is that your not going to find any easy way to pass within a book, you need to be fit, mentally prepared, fully enthusiastic on your future career as an army officer and also have a smile on your face and be yourself. No body knows what AOSB look for, I am certainly non the wiser having been through it myself. I wish anyone attempting AOSB good luck.

3.0 out of 5 stars Warning 15 Jun 2012
Format:Paperback
I have read all the reviews for this book. Most seem to have been posted by people whose only interest is to review self help books in a ridiculously positive way. Most of them do not appear to have been for Officer selection and want to pass A levels, become a train driver or do something other than the Army.

I assume therefore that most of these reviews are fake and planted by the firm that prints the book. Amazon should grip this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well written book 15 Sep 2014
Format:Paperback
Although the book is slightly shorter than I had expected, the sample questions and answers for the interview questions are extremely helpful in giving an idea of what the Army expects and in formulating your own responses to these questions. It gave me a lot more confidence in my preparation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just for AOSB - Relevant for NCO's 1 July 2014
By Xyz232
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Lots of info in here - If your looking for some tips on the AOSB definitely get this book. Provides everything you need with a lot of valid exercise questions. Even if you are looking to join the ranks - this will give you a good insight into what is required and what are seen as leadership abilities (Should help if your looking for an NCO rank)

1.0 out of 5 stars This will book will set you up to fail 28 Jan 2013

Don't buy this book, the author has never been through this process and his advice is useless. All the information you actually need is on the British Army website anyway

How 2 pass the Army Officer selection board was on the whole very useful. However the Planning exercise element could do with some better methods of tackling the problems. Furthermore not very many alternative solutions to the problems were available for reference. Some of the answers I thought were a bit abstract and difficult to work out. Overall though very useful. I think a bit more reference on what is expected physically, such as constitution of the assault course and how to tackle command tasks effectively would improve the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Army Officer AOSB book by Richard McMunn 5 Dec 2012
By Chris
Format:Paperback
Before I bought this book I was sceptical about some of the reviews. Having purchased it from the official site I found it to be an excellent resource. The book is for officer applicants and covers the different elements of the AOSB. It provides advice on the scoring criteria and also adopts a method teaching that will show you how to score high by demonstrating the qualities required to pass and also how you will likely be assessed.

The book could do with more sample tests but overall, for the price, it is a worthwhile read.
