Manufacturer's Description

Armored Core 4 is the latest title in the historic mech-battling action and simulation saga, and is the first 'next-generation' incarnation of the internationally beloved franchise. This dazzling brand new chapter offers the ultimate in fast-paced, high octane mech simulation.

Armored Core 4 exploits the awesome power of the Xbox 360 to deliver astounding visuals and eye-watering special effects, including dynamic lighting and shadows, swirling water and mysterious fog. Mech designs benefit from massively more detailed 3D models and the arenas and environments now offer a giant leap in interactivity and detail. Players can use these interactive features to their advantage, for instance by smashing open arena walls to let in the light and search for enemies, or by hiding in water to ambush rivals.

The classic customisation returns in full effect in Armored Core 4. Every element of the game is designed to offer players the highest possible level of customisation when designing and building their mechs. With just a few simple and intuitive steps, players can augment their creations with serious weaponry, external armour and internal hardware and then fine tune and tweak each unit for best performance. The possibilities are almost infinite! Players are able to test drive their creations in a series of trials and then, when ready for battle, challenge other mechs in order to advance through the exciting tournaments and leagues.

Multiplayer modes feature heavily in Armored Core 4, with deathmatch games and most importantly, full online support for battling with international players as well as exchanging match data, emblems and even entire robot creations.

With its abundance of features, awesome destructive firepower and fast-paced action, coupled with the incredible level of detail in customising mechs, Armored Core 4 is a sure-fire hardcore action game smash.

I always had one major problem with AC games - the control system. The games weren't always that great but they (generally) got better as time went on, but one thing that remained was the shockingly bad control system.

You could get used to it, but it never really worked. They tried to change it a few times, but none of that worked either.

Thankfully it now does. There are multiple control schemes, and if those don't work you can now customise your own layout (as far as I know this is the first AC game to offer that).

Aside from that, combat is more fluid as the 'NEXTs' you pilot in this game have improved capabilities over the tradiational ACs (the name for these new ACs being an excuse for gameplay differences compared to the other games), such as being able to hover along the ground without using energy. This also applies to water, so no more sinking and going out of bounds.

It also seems to me that the NEXTs are much better with energy in general, making air combat (sort of) possible and energy weapons more viable for extended combat. In fact, it's possible to build an AC that can fly for an unlimited amount of time (or longer than I could be bothered to try it) although this relies on using ballistic weapons, a massive generator and light/efficient parts.

Oh, and the heat system is completely gone. Finally.

Anyway, if you like this sort of thing it's a great game. People that don't like Armored Core may not enjoy this, but if you don't like all the rest, why are you still banging your head against a wall by looking at this one?

Because it is a lot more fluid, if you preferred the slightly slower, more methodical combat in earlier AC games you may be better off with Chrome Hounds; but considering that you can get that for about £10 now and this for £25 already, why not get both?

Fun:
as a mainly casual gamer i find a lot of games at the minute lack.
they lack depth with a 6 hour runtrough single player, follow this corse use this gun, do what we want and dont think about it.
armored core i found a breath of fresh air. they let you choose what way you want to play and how you want to look.
the options are amazing from the parts to being able to paint each part indevidually in a way you want (my son insisted on optimus prime). some may find this overwelming but there are prebuilt ones so its not an issue. you can even tune your mech sorry AC to preform in a way you want but auto is avalible to take care of it for people like me who have no idea.

then you start the game. it is more challanging as most games go SHOOT EVERYTHING THAT MOVES WITH MANY BULLETS, armored core goes in one mission you have many targets just shoot one shot in a controlled manner at each target and its easy the first time i fired everything everywhere and failed. next time one shoot one kill passed with ease.

you have to think.you have to plan. you have to choose your targets carfully. the ai is brutal. it can be frustrating but
the satisfaction from completing a level or completing a combat simulation far excedes even beating some other games completly

get and enjoy

Armoured Core 4 is a classic 2007 release that knows exactly what kind of game it is. A 30 meter high robot game that's who! Highlights for me so far would be...

+ choosing what robo limbs to use and which paint scheme and pattern is just awesome
+ selecting a grenade cannon and watching the resultant semi-nuclear possibilities of the games ballistic simulation
+ flying through the air firing off scores of homing missiles cleverly locked to a target I am viewing through an additional view target screen similar to pc games of old (i'm looking at you Heavy Gear)
+ seriously the grenade cannon - its just so silly its genius

- unfortunately the story is the only thing between you and that sweet robo gameplay
- some more variation perhaps? here there's only shoot - then shoot some more
- from perspective of 2012 gaming these graphics and animations seem underwhelming at times
- forget cutscenes showing a human face emoting something about this world! here there's mostly nothin but emotionless mission briefings

So from me this game gets a 7/10 just shy of perfecting its craft but then there is Armoured Core For Answer...
