"A Dog's Ransom" is the six-part second story from series 1 and based on a Patricia Highsmith novel.
The plot revolves around a middle-class, cultured couple who have been recieving menacing letters attacking them for being posh. One night the husband is walking their poodle in the local park when he throws a stick for the dog which lands in some bushes..... Suffice to say the dog does not return and a letter arrives demanding money or else.
This is a dark, eerie story with many memorable moments. It also provides an interesting snapshot of the police in the 1970s, complete with a Gene Hunt type CID officer who spouts racism & homophobia while mocking a young constable's Oxbridge education. The young constable turns out to be the only one with any inclination to follow up the case.
On the whole, I'd recommend this series to anyone who likes subtle, unsettling drama that leaves a disturbing aftertaste. Its a shame that more current TV drama isn't up to this standard.

Dog Gone! 28 July 2009
An odd tale of dognapping, each episode framed by blurry polaroid shots of a poodle taken in a dark park. That and the fact the over-educated police officer on the case is called 'Girly' by his fellow police officers makes for a chilling tale! Nice shots of the inside of Habitat c.1978, plus a big part for Susie Blake as a mean spirited social worker. Susie Blake ended up playing the unhinged continuity announcer on the excellent 'Victoria Wood as Seen on TV' and was never ever seen again (alas).

I remember watching this series when it was originally transmitted back in good old '78 and in particular, this story. I was really looking forward to watching it again, but to be honest, I was disappointed for several reasons. Without spoiling the plot for anybody who wishes to buy it, I was very disappointed with the end. Also, the poor constable seemed to be attacked from all sides - the police force itself and his 'supposed' girlfriend. Considering he was the only person who was interested in helping the couple he seems to have been given a real bum deal throughout the entire story. Perhaps I set my hopes too high, but having watched this DVD, I don't think I will be buying any other DVDs of the Armchair Thriller series. What a shame. A great year and perhaps in my 12-year-old mind they seemed to be great stories, but as an adult, I felt the whole thing was a bit flat.
