Book Description

5 Jan 2012

The author of the Masters of the Sea series, is back with a standalone battle book that will blow all others out of the water.

1587. Two nations are locked in bitter conflict. One strives for dominance, the other for survival.

After decades of religious strife, Elizabeth sits on the throne of England. The reformation continues. Catholic revolts have been ruthlessly quashed, and Elizabeth has ordered the execution of her cousin, Mary Queen of Scots. On the continent bloody religious wars rage, but England stands apart, her surrounding seas keeping her safe from the land armies of her would-be enemies. Only at sea do the English show their teeth. Sea captains and adventurers, hungry for the spoils of trade from the Spanish Main, regularly attack the gold-laden galleons of Catholic Spain. They are terriers nipping at the feet of war-horses but their victories disrupt the treasury of Spain, England's greatest threat, and Elizabeth's refusal to rein in her sea-captains further antagonises Philip II.

Thomas Varian is a captain in Drake's formidable navy, rising quickly through the ranks. But he guards a secret – one for which he would pay with his life if discovered: he is a Catholic. He is about to find his conflicting loyalty to his religion, to his Queen, and to his country tested under the most formidable of circumstances: facing the mighty Armada. Unknown to Varian, he will also be facing his long-estranged father, who is fighting on the side of the Spanish enemy…

4.0 out of 5 stars A great topic and a great story 27 Feb 2012
By JPS TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a superb book. It is much better than the Master of the Seas series, if only because the author knows his topic better and has researched it extensively. In addition to good story telling, three points are outstanding in my view:
- one is the description of life in England under Elizabeth I, or rather how it must have felt to live in such a kingdom when you were a Catholic, even a loyal one. England under Elizabethe was a "police state". Dozens of plots to assassinate the Queen or rebel against her, most of which had foreign help from Spain, led to a reign where all Catholics became prime suspects.
- a related point was that the opposition between English "Protestants" (Church of England) and Catholics almost bordered on civil war at times, but the civil war never really broke out, unlike what happened in France during the same period. While this latter point is not really made, the impression of England on the brink of Civil War and on the verge of disaster as foreign invasion looms is rendered rather well
- the third strongpoint is the tale of the various engagements between the English and Spanish Fleets. This is probably were the author is at his best: the Armada is NOT "Invincible". Neither are the English. Drake is just one of the commanders, and more of a privateer out for his own advantage rahter than the "super-hero that he has been made into. One (small) criticism perhaps: our Varian hero, who does seem to be a bit of a "superhero" at times. But never mind: this was a superb read that I thoroughly enjoyed.

4.0 out of 5 stars John Stack is an excellent writer 31 Dec 2011

Review

I'm sure John Stack will forgive this opening comment, due to the intended sentiment: This is the book he has be working to write, i never doubted his research in his early Roman books just some of the execution didn't work for me, but every book got better and i stuck with him because he has a knack of choosing great periods in history to explore with fictional characters.

Armada is for me proof positive that John Stack is an excellent writer, excellently written and plotted, paced to keep the reader interested, intrigued and educated, there are very few modern writers who can make you feel the waves , taste the salt and feel the spray, for me Julian Stockwin and Tim Severin are the best, but this book puts John Stack firmly up there with them.

I highly recommend this excellent stand alone Title......its a shame it wasn't the start of a new series, because these are excellently written characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars For God,Elizabeth and England 25 Jan 2012
Format:Hardcover
I am a great fan of John Stack and after the great Masters of the Sea trilogy,i was really looking forward to Armada and i am glad to report it is right up there with the Masters trilogy.John Stack has that quality with his writing of putting you in the thick of the action,so that you smell the smoke as it floods through the open gun ports as Retribution pounds the Spanish Armada.Robert Varian, our hero has plenty of swashbuckling to do as the new Captain of the Retribution,a galleon of the new "race built" class, with her fore and aft castles razed, giving her a sleek, spear like profile as he takes on Comandante Evardo Alvarez Morales of the Halcon and then later on the Santa Clara. Armada as it was with Masters of the Sea trilogy is a page turner of the highest order,John Stack is in my opinion is only a few cables behind Forester and O`Brian and i can not wait to see were he takes us with next outing.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Interesting Perspective 18 May 2013
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
For history buffs there's very little new to be had from the re-telling of the story of the Armada, but what makes this novel work well is that its told from the perspective of a loyal Englishman who risks persecution if its found out that he's also a Roman Catholic. This is the heart of the stroy and provides much of the drama - as if captaining an English warship in combat against the greatest naval force ever assembled (at that time) wasn't perilous enough. The hero's dilemma as he struggles to reach a compromise between his loyalty to his country with his religious beliefs is one that I wouldn't like to have to deal with.

We all know what happens of course. The British weather and brave sailors intervene and the Armada is vanquished. But the story isn't over with the defeat of the Spanish.

This is well worth the read and better than some of Stack's other naval stories.
