Illuminating! 24 Oct 2004
Format:Paperback
I would never have thought that there was so many different ways to lock a guy's arm! This book is well written, easy to follow, and all the pictures are crystal clear. There are a load of really clever locks in this book. Loads from a standing position! (Kinda like Chin-na) Although the usual ground fighting locks are also in there (the Judo / Jujutsu stuff). What I really found interesting were the additional pictures alongside many of the locks which showed where they could be found in the karate katas (don't do karate anymore, but perhaps I'd still be doing it if it had been taught like this!). Nice to buy a martial arts book that has so much information in it!

Proper Karate 29 Feb 2008
Format:Paperback
I first saw Iain Abernethy on a DVD about hand strikes. It was apparent that he was way, way ahead of anybody that I, at least, had seen in karate before. Prior to seeing his version of what Karate can be, I had considered most Karate taught to be antiquated and(with no slight intended) useless for the purpose that most people take up martial arts for ie: Self defence/combat first and fitness/hobby interest second. Mr Abernethy changed my mind. This man is to Karate kata what the Rosetta stone is to language; he dusts it off, puts it back together and shows you what it was all really for before it became an interesting, if rather obscure novelty in sports halls and community centres. I am now under no misapprehensions that karate, taught properly and with the correct insights is, infact, a complete 'mixed martial arts' curriculum. This book is part of the syllubus.
Three cheers to Iain Abernethy, he's a national martial arts treasure and should be knighted. (Just for the record, I am not a practioner of Karate/Bunkai Jutsu and have never even met, never mind trained under Iain Abernethy).

The Title Says It All 13 Dec 2011
By Max
Format:Paperback
Having recently returned to judo and jujitsu I was looking for a text that would help me consolidate my current knowledge and lead me to more knowledge. This book did just that. I have found it very useful for consolidation, learning further techniques and understanding of why these techniques work.

It covers not just straight and bent arm locks, but also wrist locks.

It has colour photo sequences with clear narrative and a modern fresh feel to its presentation.

I don't think you will be disappointed should you decide to buy.
