Down on his luck hypnotist Dr Carlos Lombardi(Chester Morris), who is plying his trade for 35 cents a turn at the local carnival, suddenly finds himself very much in demand, when his outlandish predictions that an ancient sea monster will rise from the depths to kill start to come true. He is offered a partnership by greedy businessman Timothy Chappel(Tom Conway) and is soon living in Chappel's house, entertaining his business partners rich friends. The one thing that Lombardi desires he cannot have though. His beautiful assistant Andrea Talbott(Marla English) rejects his advances. Still she cannot leave him. What hold does Lombardi have over Andrea, and just how much does he know about the killings?
Whilst on the surface this could be dismissed as your typical 1950's creature feature, this is anything but that. In fact, although this ship is a little creaky, its dripping with atmosphere and is packed with great performances. Morris delivers a dark, brooding performance as the sinister Lombardi, and English is just as good as the tragic Andrea. Add to that great turns from Conway in the sort of role he was adept at, and Lance Fuller as Lobardi's professional and love rival Dr Erickson, and you have a really enjoyable little film. The creature costume is also very impressive, one of Paul Blaisdell's best. Of course as per usual, Blaisdell also played the role of the creature. Very enjoyable slice of 1950's horror. 4 out of 5.
