Video Description

Originally released in the fifties during the atomic decade, Day The World Ended tells the story of what happened when man finally destroys himself in a nuclear holocaust. Only 7 people survive the blast including a rancher and his beautiful daughter, an arrogant thug and his striptease dancer girlfriend, a gold hunter and his donkey and a handsome geologist carrying a contaminated man. The fate of the human race lies in the hands of this unique crowd as they battle against the new mutated world.

Samuel Z. Arkoff started producing movies with his partner James Nicholson in 1954 when they set up American International Pictures and capitalised on the trend of teenagers being the main cinema audience of the time. This classic b-movie follows the survivors as tensions flare over the meagre rations and rancher’s daughter, as the geologist and thug fight it out to carry on the human race with the stunning girl much to the disgust of her atomically altered fiancé - the mutant monster. Who is watching the girls bathe? Will the rancher get his wish to shoot the thug? Will they all survive? Will the contaminated man get the meat, the red, raw, meat he desires? Find out in Day The World Ended!

Day The World Ended is directed by Roger Corman the ‘King of the drive-in movie’ who had a firm belief that "the monster should always be bigger than the leading lady."

Day the World Ended 7 July 2005

After the Atomic destruction a hand full of people find them selves in a valley that escaped the initial radiation. Naturedly the mix is of innocent and not so innocent women and men. This is not just any valley it was especially picked by a survivalist that expected the big one to be dropped and scoped out a valley with lots of lead around them.

Slowly encroaching on them is a strange mutant that has physic powers. Like the mutated monkeys on the atoll where they tested the bomb, this is probably the new generation of people replacements. Luckily he (it) still has a hankering for blonds in swimsuits.

There is also the possibility of contaminated rain bringing radiation to the valley.

One of the fun scenes in this Rodger Corman movie is when they throw a dummy off the cliff and you are supposed to believe it is a blond.

I just wish I had seen these movies back when I was a kid. I was never allowed to go in then and I think I would have adored them.
Now they are just totally dreadful! They have a certain camp charm but after 30 minutes that goes and you are stuck with another 40mts to get through.
Yes I have read how clever they are and that the World Ended is some sort of reworking of Adam and Eve etc. And there is some pathos when you find out
what the monster actually is I suppose..... See, I'm trying to be fair.... And if you like this sort of thing well you'll have a good time.
But I warn you, don't see them with your partner unless you want to risk your relationship. There is only so much shlock partners are prepared to endure.
They are best viewed on your own, so only you have to put up with them.
Print quality is pretty variable too - but not un-watchable I'm afraid to say.

Alex Gordon, British producer who emigrated to the US after WWII, is unfortunately much less well-known than his brother Richard, who produced some decent B movies such as "Corridors of Blood" and "Haunted Stranglers" (with Boris Karloff) or the very disturbing "Fiend without a Face". Alex conversely wrote for Ed Wood and didn't quite enjoy the cult following of his brother. This edition remedies this situation with two titles produced by Alex: "Day the world ended" and "The She creature". I won't add much to what all the reviews are saying bar to confirm that these two films (both revolving around a monster) are actually very different in style and both HUGELY entertaining. "Day" is one of the first films of Roger Corman and tells about the way the seven last survivors of a nuclear explosion have to survive. As it happens, their own collaboration proves to be much more difficult than struggling with hostile elements. The only regret is that the mutant looks laughable. The "She-creature" is more baroque in style, the plot is virtually incomprehensible, but it has this undefinable "je-ne-sais-quoi" that makes it good fun as well. The combination of fun fair, hypnotism, monsters and murders really shouldn't work but somehow does. I think this is due to the great acting work of Chester Morris (sort of poor man's Clark Gable) and the beautiful Marla English, who should have had a bigger and longer career than she did. Don't miss this DVD!
