DVD Description

Strange things are happening in Riverdale, Illinois; reports of strange lights in the sky, mysterious deaths and disappearances have led Senator Powers and the local scientific research team to start an investigation into what is happening in this small isolated American town. Whilst examining the alien-like structure jutting out of the earth they stumble upon the unbelievable truth – parasites from the centre of the earth are controlling the brains of the Riverdale citizens!

Samuel Z. Arkoff started producing movies with his partner James Nicholson in 1954 when they set up American International Pictures and capitalised on the trend of teenagers being the main cinema audience of the time. This classic b-movie follows the devastation caused by the furry brain-suckers from the centre of the earth as they fasten themselves to the townsfolk’s necks and turn them into zombies! As the town’s authorities and workers minds come under their control, communication and help are no longer a possibility and the free minds must act to save the world. Find out how and if they succeed in The Brain Eaters! The Brain Eaters is directed by B-movie legend Bruno Vesota. Well known for his B-movie acting roles, The Brain Eaters is one of his three successful directorial efforts.

3.0 out of 5 stars Short, but sweet, 11 Nov 2003

This review is from: Arkoff - the Brain Eaters [DVD] (DVD)
THE BRAIN EATERS was the original 1958 co-feature with EARTH VS. THE SPIDER, and makes a good companion to that film if you're in the mood for cheesy 1950s horror.

An innocuous little film, THE BRAIN EATERS' title pretty much gives away the plot. It seems that a strange cylinder has popped up in the woods outside Riverdale (does Archie Andrews know about this?) and soon people start either dying, acting strangely, or both. Senator Walter K. Powers arrives from Washington to sort out what's going on ("I want some ACTION!" he bellows, sounding like Sen. Ted Kennedy, I'll bet). He manages to insult everybody in sight ("Sounds to me as if the local law enforcement has an abundant supply of bunglers" he comments), but nobody seems to notice or care. For half an hour or so (half of the film's scant running time, actually) you won't notice much or care a lot, either. But when the titular cranium cooties arrive, whooo-wee! They look like dust bunnies with pipe-cleaner antennas. No, really, they are just the CUTEST little things you ever saw. Kind of like tribbles. No, no, like Furbies. Well, in any case, you'll want one for your very own. Until, of course, it starts sucking out your brain.

The DVD print and transfer are excellent, and the DVD includes replica posters and all ten trailers from the Arkoff set. The trailer for THE BRAIN EATERS is a gem: "Ejected from unexplored secret stratas – this giant harder-than-steel piston disgorges strange creatures – inundating our world – twisting the emotions of women – distorting our men!" a grim voice, teetering on the hysterical, intones. Recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Paranoid Yet?..., 7 July 2010
By Bindy Sue Frønkünschtein "bigfootsalienbaby" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Arkoff - the Brain Eaters [DVD] (DVD)
THE BRAIN EATERS is another paranoia / conspiracy gem from the 1950s. It has the same basic premise as INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS or I MARRIED A MONSTER FROM OUTER SPACE, in that the aliens dwell among us, as us! This time, the insidious creatures are from deep in the earth, rather than from outer space. They're tiny parasites, looking for human hosts to control. Once they've latched onto the back of a victim's neck, he / she becomes an automaton of eeevil! Ed Nelson (NIGHT OF THE BLOOD BEAST, THE DEVIL'S PARTNER) plays the main scientist, and Leonard Nimoy (yep, mr. spock!) shows up as an aging, bearded mouthpiece for the invading menace. Classic stuff indeed...
