Book Description

15 Oct 2009 Beautiful Dead
There's been no sign of the Beautiful Dead for weeks. Darina achingly misses Phoenix all over again. But surely he will return with the rest of the Beautiful Dead as so much still remains unresolved. It's been ten months since Arizona drowned in Hartmann Lake. Suicide, it would seem. But something doesn't add up. Drowning herself in a hidden-away lake does not sound like strong, confident, Arizona: Ellerton High School's high-maintenance drama queen.

Darina needs to help Arizona the way she helped Jonas. But time is running out ...

About the Author

Eden Maguire lives part of the time in the US, where she enjoys the big skies and ice-capped mountains of Colorado. An abandoned farmstead two hours south west of Denver gave her the perfect setting for The Beautiful Dead. "It was as if time had stood still," she says of her first chance visit to the ranch. "The kitchen still had the old rocking-chair and iron stove, the ancient barn door really did blow open and shut in the wind."
It was here that the seed for a series of paranormal romance mysteries was sown. Eden Maguire's lifelong admiration for Emily Bronte's timeless classic, Wuthering Heights, ties in with her fascination for the dark side of life and informs her portrayal of the restless, romantic souls in The Beautiful Dead. Away from her interest in the supernatural and the solitary pursuit of writing fiction, Eden's life is lived as much as possible in the outdoors, thanks to ranch-owning friends in Colorado. She says, "Put me on a horse and point me towards a mountain - that's where I find my own personal paradise."

5.0 out of 5 stars An amazing read!! 10 Oct 2009
Format:Paperback
Book one of the Beautiful Dead series had me hooked, and the second installment is not a let down!! This time its Arizona's chance to be helped, and so the plot thickens!! :) Book two gets straight into the action unlike the first book which took some getting into. It is an awesome read and I can't wait for the last two books in this series!! :)

3.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Dead: Arizona 3 Nov 2009
By Jenny, Wondrous Reads TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
I enjoyed Arizona more than Jonas, as the characters are more developed and established. Although I still haven't quite connected with them as much I'd like, I'm getting there.

Eden Maguire is very clever in the way she keeps you guessing all the way through the book. Small clues about the Beautiful Dead's deaths are given, but it's really hard to piece everything together, and I always end up being surprised at the end. The guess-who crime element keeps the story exciting, and it makes for an interesting premise when coupled with the supernatural zombies and angel wings.

Darina isn't my favourite character, but I'm growing to like her more with each book. Her dedication to helping her friends is a great quality, and it's really starting to shine through as the series progresses. I still think her relationship with Phoenix seems a bit forced, and I'm still hoping for more of their backstory in book four, which will focus on Phoenix's death. Phoenix is my favourite character at the moment -- he's well-written and engaging, and is always on hand to rescue Darina when she needs it.

The Beautiful Dead series is a good addition to zombie fiction, and puts a fresh spin on the genre. Maguire has a good handle on her story, and I think it will get better with each book. I'm looking forward to Summer, which is due for release in 2010.

5.0 out of 5 stars Book 2-Beautiful Dead, Arizona 4 Nov 2011
Format:Paperback
As the second book in the series I feel it flows seamlessly from the first, showing that not everyone is who, or what they first appear.

5.0 out of 5 stars Zombie-tastic 24 Mar 2010

The story picks up where Jonas ended. This time Darina has to help Arizona solve the mystery behind her death before the 12 months she has been granted ends.
The format remains the same as Book 1 with the story told from Darinas perspective. I found the imagery and tension far more vivid than in the first book.
The characters are being developed alongside each other all adding to the plot. Obviously from the title of the book, the main development is that of Arizona. The main thing I can say without giving away any plot details is that the adage 'never judge a book by its cover' kept popping into my head. People only see what we allow them to see, nobody can really know another person unless they experience the things the other person has to deal with. Darina is really gaining depth as a character the more she helps the others. Little plot teasers are given throughout the story adding to the tension and keeping me turning the pages.
The tension is really building and I feel a crescendo coming. I can't wait for the next installment Summer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Dead Book 2 23 Jan 2010
By Sarah Gibson TOP 50 REVIEWER TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
I really enjoyed the second installment in the Beautiful Dead series. It took a while for the action to get started in book 1 as the author had to explain the world & introduce the characters. As that has already been done this story was able to jump straight into the thick of things. I would recommend reading this series in order although as each book concentrates mainly on solving the mystery surrounding one of the Beautiful Dead I suppose you could read them as stand alone books.

This book concentrates on finding out what happened to Arizona. This is going to be easier said than done though because Arizona doesn't seem to want to help Darina find the answers. In life she didn't have any close friends & Darina knew practically nothing about her so she has no idea where to start investigating her death. Even now Arizona is keeping her secrets close to her chest and she uses sarcasm & snappy comments to push Darina away.

As the book develops & we get to learn more about Arizona we find out why she acts the way she does. It is easy to understand her behavior and Darina's opinion of her is turned around. The mystery element of the story is good and it keeps you guessing about how Arizona died right until the end. I also love the way the bad guys in this series really get their comeuppance by the end of each book.

If you liked the first book in this series I'm sure you'll like this one even more & I'm looking forward to reading Summer's story when it comes out.
