Review

Can the world's greatest philosopher solve the old mystery known to man? --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

The Daily Telegraph on Aristotle Detective

Wit in a first novel is rare enough, and when allied to the skilful unravelling of a murder story it makes us doubly grateful for Aristotle --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

I love historical crime fiction, but had never heard of Margaret Doody before, I understand she's just had her career revived. I enjoyed Aristotle Detective, the first in the series too, but this is far better... a delicious rural romp with a rattling good mystery yarn, brilliant!

what a pity there are only a few in this series - the detail of life in Athens and Greece just gets better and better, with great wit. It's fun to read the Lyndsey Davies (falco) books also to compare (sometimes Stephanos visits the same places as Marcus Didius..!)..but I digress..

The actual story lines / detective work are well worked out, so if you love Classics (in a light kind of way, with social history and a good deal of the gods, customs and peculiar practices thrown in) and a good detective yarn, this is one to treasure, especially as I believe there are only five of them to date. A really good sequel this, the 2nd of the series. But even this one was not the best...

Just brilliant, but it could just be me....

Years ago I found a copy of Aristotle Detective when I was looking for something in a history class. Doody was recommended as a "go to" lady for Greek history. I totally forgot the history and was enveloped in the mystery. Her accuracy is incredible and so is her lack of pretense...just a great story with great details. I am delighted that there are other books by the author. She really puts you in the sight and soul of Athens.
