Product Description

Sean Connery is one of the world's few true superstars. The screen creator of James Bond has commanded some of the highest fees in Hollywood and is lauded by critics and public alike. In July 2000, his unique contribution to the world of film was recognized when he was accorded a knighthood. No other British actor has had such a high profile.Yet the man himself stands back from all the Hollywood razzmatazz, private, even reclusive. Now John Parker traces the astonishing rise to stardom of a tough street kid from Edinburgh who left school at the age of 13. Arriving in London with gold teeth and tattoos to seek his fortune in the meat market of body-building, Connery fought against snobbery and prejudice to become a self-taught Shakespearian actor. Then came the big break.Auditioning for the part of James bond, he told the producers with typical bluntness how Bond should be played - and his bristling attitude landed him the job. He became an overnight star. The most famous secret agent of them all, 007 became a monster which threatened to kill Connery as an actor. He escaped to establish himself as one of the world's most versatile and highly-paid character actors, winning an Oscar for his part in "The Untouchables."

About the Author

Author John Parker has drawn on the reminiscences of many famous friends and colleagues, including Honor Blackman, Robert Hardy, Candice Bergen and Eric Sykes, a friend for thirty years, to create an authoritative and entertaining portrait of one of the most glamorous, talented and complex actors in movie history.

As biographies of international stars go, you could mistake the fact that Sir Sean Connery is a 2-D portrait that starts and ends with James Bond. In a nutshell, you're correct, but on the other hand the man is far more complex than you could imagine.

Without boring you with the obvious review of a standard bio that goes from rags-to-riches, I can simply say that there is a heavy focus on Sean's role as James Bond which will thrill fans of the genre and cinema alike, but the stories and emotions behind the icon he played are very surprising and will leave you feeling shaken and stirred in a way you probably never thought possible.

Detailing the struggle to be taken as a serious actor after the role of 007 ended, his venture into acting that pushed the boundaries and also his risks taken for fame and fortune (sometimes it worked, but mostly it didn't!), the book paints and interesting and investigative journey through the ups and downs of Sean's career both on screen, stage and as a family man. For avid film fans alike, highlights include the James Bond series, 'Highlander', 'Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade', 'The Untouchables' and even 'Robin And Marion'. No film role is left un-turned in the book to give us a detailed image of one of the most respected actors we know today.

A pleasent book that will leave you with a far greater knowledge of Sir Sean Connery than before you started, this is a great read and a wonderful span of his career from the 1950s right up to 2000s. Enjoy!

There is biography ... and then there is real biography, based on primary source interviews and fit into true culture context. Unfortunately, this book is the first, lightweight, derivative type, based heavily on previous original work by better, more astute biographers. Save your money for an original-source bio on this great actor. A no star book.

Sir Sean (Tommy) Connery A Noble Scot 26 April 2007

A special man with a long career in the movies. This book is informative, but the reality he was type-casted as James Bond and never could destroy the monster he created.
The author should have spent more time with a history of growing up in Scotland with a hard knox life of growing up without the opportunities that were not available when growing up.
This man of great character makes us want to be better people in the world at large to be productive individuals with grit...
