Hello,

I just finished reading Ariana's Pride by Margaret Lake. I purchased the book after reading the author's short story "Of Love and War." I was astonished at the character development the writer achieved in the short story; therefore, I just had to see what she could do with a full-length novel. I was not disappointed.

I chose Ariana's Pride because of the interesting action adventure storyline.

I must say that at the outset, neither Lady Ariana Devoe nor Jeremy were likeable characters. Both seemed to possess character flaws that tended to cause me to dislike them. However, as the plotline unfolds, the pair comes to recognize their weaknesses and strive to overcome them. By the end of the book, they had redeemed themselves most admirably.

The author has a wonderfully descriptive narrative, which allowed me to easily visualize the various scenes depicted in the book.

The romance aspects of the novel are better than most romance books I've read, though admittedly they are not great in number. I don't normally read romance novels, but this author of historical romances skillfully merges action adventure and romance. I've said it before, but I'll say it again in this review. Margaret Lake's style reminds me of Baroness Emmuska Orczy's The Scarlet Pimpernel that I read as a young man. Like that classic historical romance, Margaret Lake's "Ariana's Pride" is a magnificent achievement.

Like Orczy before her, Lake has the ability to draw in crossover readers who prefer adventure books. There's nothing wrong with that. To the contrary, any writer who can get a reader to expand their reading preferences serves the readers well. You action adventure fans should try this book. Romance fans, there's plenty to admire here.

I'm afraid that I did not enjoy this as much as I have other books by Margaret Lake. I found this story a little far fetched and concentrating too much on the "adult" scenes to develop the characters and story line. However, don't let my review put you off - Margaret Lake is a very good writer, this novel just isn't one of my favourites. However, there is a sequel to this book which I really enjoyed - Catherine and the Captain.

With "Ariana's Pride", Margaret Lake has managed to mix a history lesson with a spoon full of sugar. I hope that we have not heard the last of Ariana, Jeremy, the "War of the Roses" or Margaret Lake.

An auspicious debut 11 May 2009
By Leslie H. Nicoll - Published on Amazon.com

It's always fun to discover a talented new author and for me, Margaret Lake is my latest. Ariana's Pride is her first novel; it is an auspicious debut.

At its core, this is a travel saga, telling the story of Lady Ariana Devoe and Jeremy as they make their way, mostly on foot, from her father's castle, after it has been captured in a short, fierce battle, to the estate of the Baron of Pemdale, to whom Ariana is betrothed. As with any journey, lots of things happen, both good and bad. Lake keeps the story moving and the reader guessing about what is in store for the two main characters. This is really Ariana and Jeremy's story; while secondary characters appear throughout, some more well written than others, the focus is always on the protagonists.

The story was well written with lots of historical detail, which I always enjoy. There were two very small plot "flubs" which I think could have been tweaked and would have taken the book from "very good" to "great" (and the reason for my 4 star rating instead of 5). Lake seems to be a careful and meticulous author and I imagine that she will learn from this--I would be surprised to see the same thing happening in subsequent offerings.

And I do hope there are subsequent offerings! As I said above, this is a wonderful debut novel from a talented author. I look forward to reading more from Margaret Lake. Adriana's Pride: recommended.

Inaccurate, insipid, and intolerable! 13 April 2011

If you like your historical romances accurate don't read this book! The author seems unsure what time period she has set her novel. Dialogue is peppered with modern terms, clothing descriptions span something like four or five hundred years, and the actions and thoughts of the characters are just as anachronistic. Characters are unbelievable. The plot is transparent. The dialogue is awkward. Don't waste your time.

I hope to see more of Ms Lake's work. This book is a page turner in the best sence. It is well researched and written. No time wasted in reading this. Of course it is also set in my favorite period of English history; The War of the Roses.

An incredible first book 14 May 2009

I enjoyed this book very much. And I am not a reader of Romance novels. I don't think this book is. It is a historical novel with a romance in it. The characterizations are excellent. Ms. Lake presents the main two characters and they are less than 100% likable. However as they overcome hardships and meet new challenges in a very short period of time, they grow-up. And they become much more likable to each other as well as to the reader.
I give this book 5 stars because is is so good for a first book.
And I look forward to more from this author and will purchase subsequent offerings.

I really liked this book. Good story line full of adventures. Main characters where well done, you could watch them mature and grow as the story progresses.
