Description

After the breakup of seminal British Invasion popsters The Zombies, keyboardist-songwriter Rod Argent formed his own eponymously named band in 1969. Though the group at first continued its predecessor's focus on melodic pop, Argent began veering more and more into expansive prog-rock with heavy jazz and classical influences--especially after the departure of co-songwriter Russ Ballard in 1974. This documentary offers a career retrospective and critical review of Argent's recorded output--from their 1969 self-titled debut to their final Ballard album, 1974's ENCORE--through interviews with critics and musicologists, behind-the-scenes footage, and archival live performances of tracks such as "Hold Your Head Up,""God Gave Rock 'n' Roll to You," "Liar," "Rejoice," and more.

2.0 out of 5 stars Inside Argent? Outsider's view, 20 Nov 2007
By P. Quinn "Long time Argent fan" (Hertfordshire UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
A disappointing DVD with no input from the band in terms of interviews and commentary. The music clips are mainly from one studio session (Granada TV) a there are only three complete tracks on the DVD, the rest being curtailed with critical commentary (which is OK and does hold some truth).

I have watched the DVD once and am unlikely to look at it again for many months to come... an opportunity lost by the producers of this DVD, if it had more substance they could sell this in significant volumes.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good information, not enough music..., 9 May 2009
By Joy Andis "Adastria" (Seattle, WA USA) - See all my reviews
I am always happy to learn more of the artists that I admire. I had hoped that this dvd would provide some live performances, as I was too young to ever get to see Argent 'live'. In that I was a bit dissapointed. Still I do like the information that the people interviewed provided. For instance, it was the first I ever heard that Yes asked Rod Argent to join the band after Rick Wakeman departed (the first time). Also I completely agree with the constantly expressed sentiment that 'Argent'were "criminally underrated".
As often happens, the ones with the gimmicks whether or not they have any real talent, get the attention of the media and the general public.
Because Rod Argent was a no nonsense musician totally dedicated to his art, as was Russ Ballard too for that matter, many great moments went unnoticed.
If anyone has the ears to listen, they will understand why Argent was one of (if not THE) best progressive rock band around, perhaps this documentary dvd serves as a good introduction to a truly great band.
