Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Los Amigos Invisibles pull out all the stops on their second album, Arepa 3000: A Venezuelan Journey Into Space. Deliberately eclectic and multi-styled, the Venezuelan six-piece take their cue from the Western dance music that infiltrated the clubs of Caracas in the 1980s and '90s. Although they respect Latin styles, all of the tracks on Arepa take their cue from French house, disco, funk, hip-hop, drum & bass. Where others fail in similar experiments, Los Amigos Invisibles' effort is sure-footed with only the occasional detail imparting a feel of false modishness. The album checks in with the title track, a swooning melancholic groove that could give anything on the Compost label a run for its money. Then it morphs into the summery funk of "La Vecina" before giving "Que Rico" the Salsoul disco treatment. There are nods to the Latin dancefloor where the band successfully rips up the rulebook: tracks like the merengue of "El Sobon" and bossa nova "Si Estuvierras Tu" hint at the band's versatility and sense of fun. But it's songs such as "Amor" and the steamy "Piazo e' Perra" which really articulate where their affinities lie. These breezy slices of Latino-house are beefed up by a Masters At Work-style production, proving that Los Amigos Invisibles certainly know how to rock the dancefloor. Solid and wonderfully irreverent, Arepa is sweaty and raucous dance music that feels enigmatically out of time. --Maxine Kabuubi

Some friend told me to get this album, because I really dig funk and disco music but I always asked people in stores if they knew of any bands that played a fusion of acid jazz, funk and if possible sensual vocals. Of course they just told me Jamiroquai and stuff like that, but nothing with enough feeling that I would just sit back and listen or stan up and dance alone like I'd somked some stuff on the way to playin the record,....seriously I can't stop the CD it has 19 songs and I hit autoplayback so I don't have to get up or stop dancing. This is a cd where all the songs are made to be a hit, this guys are just not popular enough. They have a merengue song, a salsa song, which is recorded like underground salsa, like putting a hand on the amplifier, All the other songs have their own style but they all end up being a really awesome and interesting fusion beetwen latin music (percussion), acid jazz (guitars), funk (bass, guitars), it's just all there, and the guy's voice? well sexy enough that I don't care it isn't a woman, besides it's in spanish it sounds extremely good, they also have an international song called "amor", it's in french, spanish and english, excellent. Really, you don't even need to listen to the album, if you don't like it I'd be happy to pay you back and I'm not even the artist, I'm just happy for the first time with music 'cause I found what the future of music is about, it's about mixing whatever you want and make it sound good. 6 out of 5 stars!

Grooveelicious! 26 Dec 2005

Quite simply, this is the greatest, most infectiously groovy and joyful party cd ever. And Los Amigos are just as hot live - they should be huge!

Los Amigos De Todo El Mundo 14 Oct 2000
By Armando M. Mesa - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Los Amigos did it again ! This group makes a Latino proud to be a Latino. I would love to find out what their secret is or inspiration for writing and performing music with so much high energy and zest for life. This music appeals to the global partying masses. You do not have to understand or speak Spanish to appreciate their craftsmanship (though it helps). Some critics have tried to dismiss this group as another international novelty/kitsch act; THEY'RE NOT.Their lyrics border on tongue and cheek humor about partying, romance, sex and life with a slight hint of social commentary. Their sounds are a combination of retro 70's funk and disco with a strong Latin, pop-rock edge. Another highly recommended c.d. by this group is their previous release titled New Sounds of the Venezuelan Gozadera.Check 'em out;I promise you no regrets (just a lot of guilty partying pleasure) !

Smooth, funky, goofy, subtle. 20 Oct 2003
By Idiosyncrat - Published on Amazon.com

Musically speaking, Los Amigos Invisibles are an extremely smooth and funky band, seamlessly mixing Anglo and Caribbean Hispanic elements into their music, in a way that's accessible to many audiences. Yet in their eclecticism, their regional specificity never gets watered down-- their humor, which pervades the whole album in particular, is very specifically Hispanic Caribbean. And this is not just in the lyrics of the songs (hilarious though they are). The musical and stylistic allusions are up to it, too; for example, "El Barro", a song about a boy with a pimple in his nose, will send anybody familiar with Latin teeny-bopper boy bands reeling with laughter; "El Baile del Sobón" is a hilarious cartoonish parody of everything that's wacky about your random disposable roots Merengue song. The way they sing in general also often sounds "off-hand" in a way that I'm not sure translates across their cultural context, adding to the effect. A work of genius.

A Funky Good Time! 11 Sep 2005
By Mark A. Carter - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This CD is I believe the only record I own by a Venezuelan artist. I have no grasp of the language or culture from this area but going from previous reviews of this album I was intrigued to give this album a listen. It's a great funky ride with these Los Amigos Invisibles, which I'm guessing means `The Invisible Men' - Hey maybe I do grasp Venezuenalenese?! It's a great upbeat bunch of songs. Happy & uplifting for most of its course, it always puts me in the right frame of mind after a hard days work. For example `Cuchi-Cuchi' which I think is a slightly naughty number and even though I'm not conversant with the language I can still tell that there's a lot of humor to be found here. Check out `Masturbation Session' - What could that be about I wonder. Anyway the music is wonderfully realized rhythmically using nice percussion & quite subtle guitar work at times. Ranging from slushily romantic to high spirited sing-alongs some of the tracks could have come from the 60's and some from the 90's. There's even a 30 second techno track `No Le Metas Mano' + a corny boy band track `Amor' (sung in English no-less) & there's a nice interesting mix on show here. My favorite tracks are `Mujer Policia' & the horrificaly catchy `Pipi'. Get that out of your head if you can. I found this CD to be very inventive and original with a wide range of musical style's which makes for an interesting listen & variety is the spice of life. So come and have some fun in the sun with these invisible men. You'll be all the better for it believe me.
