"The fifth and final instalment in Simon Scarrow's electrifying ARENA series sees gladiator Pavo face his most gruelling battle yet as strives to avenge his father's death.

From the moment his father was executed in the arena for an act of treason, former military tribune and condemned gladiator Marcus Valerius Pavo has burned with the desire for revenge. Now all that stands between Pavo and victory is a man considered by many to be the greatest gladiator to have ever lived: Hermes. But even with Optio Macro as his trainer, and the help of the snakish imperial secretary, defeating Hermes appears an impossible task. With a conspiracy unfolding within the walls of the palace and a storm gathering over Rome, Pavo will have to call on everything he has learned under Macro if he is to his triumph over his father's killer - and become the champion of the arena...

4.0 out of 5 stars Really enjoyed this series 19 July 2013

The end to any tale is always bitter sweet, you look for conclusion to a tale to know what will happen, but then thats it no more. The great thing about this ending is that it is also the beginning, In the e-book is chapter one of book one Under the Eagle.
Champion is just what you would expect it to be, the training of Pavo to face Hermes, its going to have an element of the incredulous with again a beginner in the arena facing up to champion of the arena, a man unbeaten in 50 fights. But Simon also manages to bring some sanity and drama to the training and also how that training will help in the fight. There are some lovely moments between Macro and Pavo, a pair as unlikely As Macro and Cato but who have come to respect each other, Nacrissus finally makes more of an appearance, showing that he is actually less slimy than murena.
All in all a very good solid story and a great way to end this series of tales.
Really enjoyed this series and i hope Simon does more

4.0 out of 5 stars Roman Series. 5 Jun 2014

As for the previous remarks to First sword and challenger books They definitely seem to be chapters of a book made into short stories not up to the usual standard, you just get into the nub of the story when you have to look for the next part of the story.

Good book but cheap ending. You can never stop getting tricked into more and more series. Good luck to those people who read the next series.

Like the style and how a story and history fit comfortably. Only problem I am reading his books faster than he can write them.
