Product Description

Ripped from the headlines of today's news, "Are You Positive?" is a fictitious courtroom drama in the style of John Grisham.

26-year-old Tyree Johnson stands accused of first degree murder in a prominent South Carolina courtroom. But his murder weapon is not a gun or a knife; in fact, there was no violent crime at all. His “victim,” Beth Ann Brooks, dated Tyree for a few months, and they made love more than once. However, Tyree Johnson had been diagnosed HIV-Positive, and the prosecution claims that Beth Ann Brooks was infected with HIV by Tyree and died some months later.

The defense, however, claims there is reasonable doubt that Tyree’s HIV diagnosis was wrong – that, according to numerous scientific studies, the so-called “HIV tests” are fraught with errors, and have been ever since their inventor, Dr. Robert Gallo, lied on his patent application. Furthermore, Tyree’s lawyer argues that there is no scientific evidence that HIV is transmitted by heterosexual intercourse, and that Tyree’s girlfriend died from taking lethal anti-retroviral drugs rather than from any HIV/AIDS-related illness.

Based on more than 500 actual scientific studies and references, the author claims that every word of sworn testimony is true and verifiable.

"Are You Positive?" raises serious questions about whether anyone has ever been properly diagnosed as HIV-Positive, and whether most AIDS victims are dying from the side-effects of the HIV medications prescribed by their doctors – all in a spell-binding novel.

You be the judge.

First of all, this is a work of fiction. The story is based around a courtroom drama in the USA where a young man is accused of murder, by infecting a young woman with HIV, after which she dies. The story itself is well written and in many cases quite compelling. The author puts a great deal of effort into providing what he indicates is accepted research into HIV / AIDS.

I was not particularly aware of AIDS denialism, and this book has helped make me much more aware of the controversy. Denialists seem to fall into one of 2 camps; politically or theologically motivated. Stephen Davis is a former Scientologist which I would suggest indicates where he stands. Their arguments seem to be composed of selectively choosing to believe some research, whilst ignoring much else; and I found that in almost all the cases referred to in the book, the specific research projects were completely discredited following peer review. Many of the arguments are based on incorrect information, and statements are put forward as valid scientific evidence, when in fact they are actually only viewpoints.

I fully support the concept of questioning facts and beliefs; and would argue that people should be free to put forward their own ideas. However, it worries me that some people might read this book and base their views on HIV / AIDS on what they read here. There are many valid places to get a balanced and objective point of view; this is not one of them.

I was torn between giving this book 4 stars for the quality of the writing, or dropping it to 3 stars as it is poor science dressed up; in the end, I decided on the latter. By all means read it, and think about the arguments; then do some research yourself on the points raised, and you'll be armed with a better understanding of the issues.

Are you positive? 23 May 2011

This book was a difficult one to read as it contained far too much medical jargon. The only reason I managed to get to the end of the book and gave it an overall 4 stars was the powerful underpinning message of the damage that can be done by choosing to be ignorant. As someone whose life hasn't been blighted by Aids I have got no idea whatsoever as to truth or otherwise of the key elements of this book as I've never need to seek answers to such questions. Nevertheless it painted a grim picture of what it would mean for those unfortunate enough to be told "you have Aids".

WOW 31 July 2011

I bought this book assuming it was "just" a story. I am not HIV Positive and to my knowledge do not know anyone who is so this is not a subject close to my heart. I was so amazed at what I was reading I convinced myself that it was a very clever work of fiction until I got my laptop out and googled a lot of the stuff quoted in this book. It is very scary stuff and totally outrageous if even half of it is true. I spent as much time saying Oh my God, listen to this and reading paragraphs out to friends and family as as I did reading the book. This is compelling stuff but must be totally mindblowing to those unfortunate enough to have HIV or to loved ones that have it or who have already died of aids! This book should be compsulsory reading, it might make the world a more tolerant place. Well done Stephen Davis brilliant!
