5.0 out of 5 stars A must-have self help book 13 May 2002
By A Customer
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is fantastic! I cannot recommend it more strongly. The book is not a naff 'how to get a man' book, it really helps you work out why you make mistakes not only with partners, but also with relationships generally. It really helps you get to know yourself and why you make the relationship choices you do. It is very practical with lots of helpful advice and strategies, and quizzes. It is good fun. I have put one or two of the suggestions into practice and it is really helping me. Forget about the naff cover, some of the phrases and typeface, read and take in the contents, you will be impressed by how useful this book is. Go on BUY IT!!!

I had this book for 5 years on my bookshelf before I finally plucked up the courage to read it. When I finally did read it, it was hard to read about myself and very painful but also very healing at the same time and opened up my eyes to why I had been making the same mistakes over and over again in my relationships. I personally feel every kid in school should read this book before dating, everyone in a relationship and considering a relationship should read it even those who are married!

If there ever was a Bible on relationships, THIS is the book to read! Barbara covers all issues, every nook and cranny, opens up our eyes, shows us what to look for, how to build a compatability list, how to avoid the wrong people, how to choose the right guy, and basically a step by step guide to doing it right!

Barbara practically hands it to us on a plate and my only wish is that I had read it 5 years ago when I initially bought it which would have saved me the heartache of the last relationship which I WOULD have avoided if I had read her book! I would have known the signs when I saw them and I would have known what to do etc etc! Thank you Barbara for writing this book for all of us!

5.0 out of 5 stars Ten out of ten! 17 Oct 2003
By Lady H
Format:Paperback
I first read this book 3 years ago as I was breaking up from a relationship and it helped me to make sense of what happened as well as what had gone wrong in my previous marriages. I read it very thoroughly - having lots of fun as well as learning a great deal from the case histories, tests and quizzes. I made my compatibility list and kept it in my handbag. It made me believe that I deserve happiness as much anyone else, how to not settle for less than the best for me, and saved me from making a bad mistake with a man who wasn't right for me. 18 months later I married a man I knew from my church, and we are 92% compatible! I have recommended the book to 2 of my closest friends, both of whom have found it immensely helpful too. The best book on relationships I have ever read, I couldn't commend it more highly. It's full of (un)common sense, insightful and highly practical. A must for anyone - even before the first date!! Our marriage is the envy (& relief!)of many of our friends, family and church. We are proof that a blissfully happy marriage is not only possible, but attainable. Do yourself a favour - go for it - but not before you read & do the exercises in this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Book I have Ever Read.... 15 April 2001
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I found this book by accident, I thought it would be really difficult to follow and understand, but it couldn't be easier to read, I learned so much about myself and the relationships I have had in the past and now that I know more about myself and warning signs etc to look for and how to make my own compatability list then I don't think I will be making the same mistakes again.

I can recommend this book to anyone whether you are married or single. It has become a bible to me and I keep referring back to this book and the lessons I learned about myself whilst reading it.

Beware though because you may discover things you don't really like, but at least if you know what they are you can work on fixing them.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a wonderfully useful book. 21 Dec 2000

I would absolutely agree with all the above comments - especially having been through a major break up - there is stacks of common sense in this book - something that is fairly uncommon!.

1.0 out of 5 stars The worst self help book I have ever read. 28 Jan 2013
By Avido
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Don't let the title of the book fool you because that's the only clever thing about it. Also don't let the word 'Doctor' fool you either. The book is a hotchpotch of personal opinion and conjecture with a bit of uncited theory thrown in. This book would unlikely pass any thesis requirements. She's less self help guru and more 'aunty who's been around the block a bit'. If you want an aunty style ramble then this is your book. But if you are looking for answers, don't waste your money. This woman is not a practicing therapist. Her 'case studies' are friends she's spoken to over brunch, idiots who have called into her radio show and people she's walked across campus with after she has given a talk. I really can't critisize this book enough. I wish there was a zero star option. It's absolutely the worst book I've ever read!!!

WOE! TALK ABOUT FORCING ONE TO BE HONEST WITH HERSELF/HIMSELF! Barbara writes with an uncommon quantity of wisdom, helping the reader to objectively evaluate practically everything that could become a problem in a developing or potential relationship. However, she also gives the reader the tools to evaluate whether or not a potential mate will produce MINIMAL problems in a serious relationship; in effect, readers will know if someone is suitable for them or not. Some readers may not even have to reach the end of this book before making that all important decision to continue, or not continue, with that person. Barb uses some "harsh" language, but does not get out of hand by using a profane style of writing. The harsh words she uses are harsh only because they are real. Also, as a traditional and religious reader, I find it difficult to appreciate some of the advice this book gives, like premarital sex, to try someone on, and see if he or she fits. (Religious or traditional readers will want to have their principles "in tact" before reading this book, lest they feel tempted to "give in".) However, this book should be required reading for all people ever planning to get married. Only because this book was not written from a traditional standpoint did it receive only a 9. Otherwise, this book is a sure 10, out of 10.
