I loved LV previous novel To Be Someone and was not disappointed with her follow up. The story of Emmas search for her birth mother and her own attempts to mother her little sister following the death of their parents was very moving. I could completly identify with Emmas indecision about telling her sister she wanted to search for her mother-worrying that Stella would feel rejected. In between the lines was the underlying fact that Emma has selflessly devoted herself to her sister for the past ten years with little thought for herself. Even her profession as an aromatherapist was chosen as the course was short and would bring in enough income to support them.

The other side of the story: Emmas love life is fairly satisfying. I knew Gavin was a rat and that Robert had to be the one for her (this is fairly predictable and I dont think I am spoiling the book by telling you so) but the interaction between the characters is good and just about sexy enough to keep me interested.

The reason that I gave this four stars and not 5 is that I felt the ending was a little rushed. The book is divided into three sections and the final part was too short...

That said this is a great book about familys, making friends and following your dreams (corny. I know, I know)- even if they dont turn out quite the way you hoped.

I bought this having read To Be Someone by the same author last year. I've never read a novel about adoption before, and probably wouldn't have ordered it if I hadn't known her writing from her first book. I'm so glad I did. It really makes you think - about your relationship with your own mother, your own brothers and sisters and how it affects you. At the same time the author's humour is all her own, kind of dry and wistful and often laugh out loud funny.

Are You My Mother? 14 Sep 2002

I siezed on this book because I had so enjoyed Louise Voss's first novel To Be Someone. And I wasn't disappointed. If anything Are You My Mother is better. There's something about the way in which Louise Voss writes that is really touching and makes you want to keep turning the page. I will be recommneding this book to my friends.
