From Amazon.co.uk

Writers Jeremy Lloyd and David Croft managed something quite clever with this, the film version of the 1970s sitcom Are You Being Served?. The idea of this cheery collection of comedy stereotypes--the pompous one, the vulgar one, the camp one, the shifty one and so on--being confined within a department store was a master stroke, as it allowed any kind of situation to arise without the plot having to exceed the restrictions imposed by the set. How, then, to keep the same theme for the big screen without just offering the television series writ large? Simple: send the whole cast on holiday together but make sure they can't leave their hotel, a state of affairs contrived easily enough by throwing a guerilla uprising into the plot.

So it is, then, that the staff of Grace Bros. descend on the Costa Plonka while the store is closed for refurbishment. There are all the usual jokes involving knickers, boobs, toilets and gay sex (sometimes all at once), adding up to a good slice of nostalgic fun for anyone who was there when lapels really were that wide. Incidentally, this item is worth having just for the wonderful Frank Langford caricatures on the cover.

On the DVD: Are You Being Served? comes to the digital format with just one extra item, a trailer.--Roger Thomas

3.0 out of 5 stars Carry On Are You Being Serviced 8 Nov 2010
Format:DVD
When Young Mr. Grace sends the staff of Grace Brothers to Costa Plonka on vacation while the store is being remodeled, they find the accommodations less than they expected, including being at the center of a revolution.

Based on the popular television series, and utilizing the same actors, Are You Being Served? The Movie has a very different feel from the former. It is partly the difference in filming techniques from little screen to big screen.

OK, it's creaky, incredibly dated, and the sets (or was there just one set?!) are wobbly, but that's all part of the charm. It's also quite perceptive of the attitude of the British abroad, that still persists to this day. My friends and I always seem to end up quoting from this film when we go abroad!

The best scene has to be when the myopic Ernest Grainger, who's never been on a plane before, enters what he thinks is the lavatory (it's actually the cockpit). 'Oh, I'm sorry - will you be long?' he says to the pilot. 'About two hours' replies the pilot. 'Oh dear- I'll go to the other end' replies Mr Grainger. Absolutely priceless!

Intellectual it isn`t,just a good belly laugh start to finish. All the old jokes double entendres and inuendo filled camp humour that made the tv show so popular for more than a decade.Inman sugden thornton & co at their funniest.Cheeky irreverant and pollitically incorrect.Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm Free... 20 April 2002
By A Customer
Format:DVD
The true comedy of 'Are You Being Served' is captured in this film. The same jokes, people and laughter is all included in this marvellous adventure, where the staff go on holiday.

While the start of the film is instore at Grace Bros, the rest of the film is at the Costa Plonka, where the antics continue further.

Great comedy, and just as good as the original series, a must see for all 'Are You Being Served Fans?'

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as bad as I'd expected 31 Jan 2010
By Bart
Format:DVD
This film starts out in a rather rickety replica of the men's and ladies' fashion departments from the original BBC series. It had me put off from further viewing. Over time I gave it another go and I must say, it wasn't as bad as I'd expected. Once the cast is away from the inferior props and safe in Costa Plonka the characters regain some of their original composure. In the seaside hotel they resume their sexual innuendoes and double entendres. Some even fully copied from the original series. Instead of the canned laughter, airport-lounge-music plays throughout the film, not enhancing the tongue in cheek humor. It is the sheer craftmanship of all the cast which makes this film worthwile. Leads Molly Sudgen, Wendy Richard, Frank Thornton, Arthur Brough, Trevor Bannister, John Inman and Nicolas Smith played alongside Andrew Sachs, aka Manuel from 'Fawlty Towers' and succeeded in making the most of the mediocre storyline and the - presumably - low budget. Spoiler: Even on the Spanish coast, young Mr. Grace turns up unexpectedly, rewarding the staff with his hallmark words; 'You've all done very well!'.
