Synopsis

The staff at Grace Brothers rarely actually sold anything, but there were always certainties about the much-loved 70s series: Mr Humphries was 'free', Mrs Slocombe was worried about her 'pussy' and Young Mr Grace would appear to declare 'You've all done very well'. Alongside Captain Peacock, Mr Grainger, Mr Rumbold, Mr Lucas and Miss Brahms they filled the store with comic bickering, preposterous sales ideas and almost any excuse for dressing up. One of the sauciest, campest and funniest sitcoms of the decade. This box set includes every episode from series 1-5.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant entertainment, 12 Sep 2008
By beau nydle "labrat" (chertsey, surrey, uk) - See all my reviews
Comedy at it's best, the sort you can't get nowadays. It's not allowed. And if you thought that Wendy Richard was just the stodgy old bint in Eastenders, have a look at this . You'll get the shock of your life. The first episode in series one is in black and white, the rest in colour, which will give you an idea of the age of it. But it's lost nothing in the years between. In fact, it's far better than anything labelled as comedy in the last 5 years. One of the best things that will come up your garden path. Enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Flawless, Breath-taking trip down Memory Lane!, 12 Sep 2008

The sitcom to end all sitcoms is back in a fabulous box set taking us all back to the days when nobody got offended by anything anywhere on TV that nowadays would be considered `Politically In-Correct'.

You all know the synopsis by now so it's left up to me to say "Sod the politically correct crowed" and but this slice of 70's TV sitcom history because it's very funny and you won't find anything offensive in it in my opinion!

Mr & Mrs Politically Correct Censor - "Are You Free?"

Buy it - have a laugh, a proper one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bawdy humour at it's finest, 4 Oct 2008
By Wayne Redhart "Also on Twitter!" (West Midlands, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
Despite the many years that have now passed, 'Are You Being Served' remains a glorious relic from a golden era of comedy. What a pity that the politically incorrect style that was exemplified by the show (and such other 70s favourites as 'On the Buses' and 'The Benny Hill Show') has since been banned by the PC brigade, in order to prevent any offence from being caused to even a small minority of viewers. It deeply saddens me when I see the restrictive leash of 'good-taste' that is ever being fastened around the neck of contemporary TV comedies (such as 'Little Britain').

Anyway, who could possibly forget Mr Humphries' effeminate mincing or the notorious innuendos about Mrs Slocombe's 'fanny'? Not having seen the series in many years, I decided to pick up this box set a few months ago- after a chance encounter with a John Inman lookalike. Never before had I encountered anyone who bore such a striking resemblance! He had it right down to even the cheeky gap between the teeth. Indeed, were it not for the fact that Inman has sadly passed on, I should probably have gone over and asked for his autograph. I am sure glad I didn't though, because shortly later I spied the balding doppelganger up to no good in a dark corner of the pub. Saucy as the character of Mr Humphries may have been, I doubt whether even he might ever have behaved so unspeakably in a bar filled with young students! Seeing as nobody else appeared to have noticed, I felt duty bound to report him to the staff. While I felt a little guilty at seeing him ejected, he probably deserved it. If he had capitalised upon the golden opportunity that had been afforded to him, however, I might simply have left him to get on with it. Yes, had he chirped out the (rather appropriate) catchphrase "I'm free!", I should think that I would have been able to see the funny side in a flash!
