Product Description

Using memorable caricatures to highlight the effects of your behaviour as a leader, this book offers a powerful model for effective leadership

Are you a Badger or a Doormat? provides you with clear instructions and simple self-coaching processes which will propel you along the path to leadership success. It uses memorable caricatures to show extreme leadership styles, teaching you what behaviour to avoid and what to do more of, in an accessible and amusing way.

Throughout the book Rosie Miller, a top international executive coach, and 20 highly experienced leaders offer advice on the mindsets, habits and working practices that will make you a successful leader. This book gives you the practical and direct guidance you need to upgrade your thinking and your behaviour to become an energetic, focused and visionary leader.

The focus is on the five skills common to all the most effective leaders:

  • making the best use of your time
  • communicating effectively
  • delegating and people development
  • motivating a diverse workforce
  • creating change

Each chapter is broken down into the following clearly sign-posted sections:

  • Highlightscontaining the key ideas in brief to enable you to scan quickly the content
  • a description of a common leadership Dilemma using cartoon caricatures to illustrate two extreme types of leadership behaviour and illustrate the unintended consequences of these extremes in practice
  • a Diagnostic for those who want to assess where they tend to fit between the two ends of the continuum
  • Balancing Wiselyintroduces the leadership mind-set that is more effective and the attributes of a leader who successfully manages this dilemma
  • The “How To” section gives detailed practical thinking, models and tools to let you be more effective at managing this dilemma
  • “In Action”is a case study illustrating one leader putting these tools and techniques into action
  • A Summary of the key points in the chapter
  • A list of powerful Self-Coaching questions designed to help you apply the thinking to your own leadership context and build your own effective leadership mindset.

I was a real sceptic about executive coaching until I read this book, but I have been blown away by the clarity of thinking and presentation of this book. Rosie Miller has clearly been there and done it; she knows what she is talking about. Her book is full of great diagrams and inciteful comments. It is a must for rising managers, both experienced and those progessing through the corporate jungle and would be a great primary source for the MBA student.

Real revelation 2 Oct 2009
By David
Format:Paperback
What a great refreshing book to find and read and read again. There are so many self help books about you never know really are worth reading until after you have spent your money and started reading. Normally they are so dry and dull without examples and implausible scenarios to use or consider. When I heard of this and had chance to read part of one chapter I was drawn in and bought it immediately. After taking it home I was compelled to read and read that instant. Now having read it from cover to cover I now have gone back and read each relevant chapter when a similar situation arises to at least consider how to develop and become a better manager. It almost my aid that's with me all the time to read when necessary.

Thank you for such a clear easy book to read and understand, I really recommend this one to you all.

Great book 30 Oct 2009
Format:Paperback
This book has made me stop and think about all the habits and ways of working I have developed over the years and given me insight into how changing my approach has made my life easier and helped others develop their skills now I don't try to control and do everything. I no nonsense book written by someone who actually understands the dilemmas of leaders. I would recommend it to anyone in a leadership role.
