Product Description

Award-winning documentary about the children's choir of South Africa's Agape Child Care Centre. Told largely from the perspective of 12-year-old Slindile Moya, one of nine siblings who lost their parents to AIDS, the film focuses on Slindile's family, including an older brother who lives at home and has the HIV virus, as well as other residents of the orphanage who are members of the choir. The Agape Child Care Centre was founded by Zodwa Mqadi ten years ago, to provide a home and education for orphaned children. To try and raise much-needed funds for the orphanage and expand its capacity, Zodwa, known as 'Grandma' to the children, decides to take the music of the Agape's extraordinary a capella choir to the wider world. Overcoming many obstacles, including a cancelled trip to Great Britain, a devastating fire and a family tragedy, Grandma and her choir achieve their dream, recording a CD with the help of South African pop star Zwai Bala, and travelling to New York to perform with Paul Simon and Alicia Keys.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing and deeply profound 3 Aug 2008
I watched this dvd for the first time today, and i have to say it is one of, if not the most, profoundly moving piece of work i have ever seen. It moved me on so many levels, and leaves one with such a sense of humility and deep rooted desire to help in some way the Children of Agape. You will laugh, you will cry, and you will be touched deeply by watching this documentary film. Please watch this, and tell your friends and family to watch it too. All funds go to helping children like this in South Africa. To the producers and director, i thank you for opening my eyes and sharing this amazing piece of work with the world.

This is a flm that may change your life. If you think you've had a hard time in life - then watch this film and you may feel shamed and humbled.

You will certainly feel awed by how these orphaned South African children cope with the most awful sorrows and yet through music they find a "gift" that raises them up into a world where their belief and hope wins through for them.

If you aren't tremendously moved by this DVD, you need to question your sense of compassion and humanity. I am going to buy the DVD and their CDs as money raised will go to the orphanage and will ensure that future generations of orphans will benefit/survive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unlike anything you have seen 10 Dec 2008
Until I saw this film on Ch4 recently, AIDS in Africa was just another of the very many huge problems the planet faces. Probably because it was filmed by a student (of film making) this documentary has an intimacy and impact that is stunning, but not in any way by being 'worthy'. Like the other reviewers I came here looking to help in some small way by buying a copy, and I aim to lend it to as many people as possible to share an uplifting experience.

2.0 out of 5 stars We are together dvd
The dvd did not look new, because it had no cellophane packaging, and there was no writing on the dvd itself. It looked like a pirate copy, but it played ok so I kept it.
