Product Description

Review

"Rosie Whitehouse s book is fresh. I have never read anything even remotely like it before." --Asne Seierstad, author of The Bookseller of Kabul (Little, Brown 2003)

Her courage and humorous versatility come across vividly in her lively narrative of first hand encounters with a difficult violent world. --The Times

This is a book about war, love and family, but for once, not told by a journalist but by a real woman, a mother and a wife. Funny and intelligent, Are We There Yet? is a truly good read. --Janine di Giovanni, author of Madness Visible: A memoir of war (Bloomsbury 2005).

Marcus Tanner, Balkan Investigative Reporting Newtwork June 5th 2007

"...it's hard to resist the pull of Whitehouse's powerful and
direct writing style. Unpretentious and free of clichés, it delivers a
tightly-paced account of a British woman's attempt to navigate her family
through strange times and events that hopefully won't reoccur in our
lifetime."

As a Romanian living abroad I'm always sensitive of how foreign visitors portray us. I was thrilled to read the author's critical but fair account of those events that shaped our path back into Europe. The book is up there with Olivia Manning's "Balkan Trilogy" and Rosie Waldeck's "Athenée Palace". I actually find it much more personal as it deals with events in our own times.
It is also a great read if you are a young woman choosing family life over a career - this book will prove your instinct right!
If you and your family have been living abroad for a while and are considering returning back home (wherever that may be) this book gives you a good insight in what to expect when you repatriate: a culture shock in reverse described with lots of humour and passion.

Passionate about life 24 May 2007
By tacitus
Format:Paperback
The author's zest for life and love of her family radiates from this book. Far too many books have been written by self-regarding journalists, pompously explaining how they observed (or even contributed) history in the making.

This is much more interesting: it is breaktakingly frank, evocative and very funny. It tells you lots about the Balkans, and even more about the secrets of a successful marriage.

exceptional read 20 May 2007
By Nataly
Format:Paperback
"Are we there yet?" is a genuinely good read. Easy to get into, it takes you on a rollercoster ride of emotions: from the sheer comedy of the family anecdotes to the compassion felt for the witnesses of the balkan wars. It raises awarness on the risks that freelance journalists can take to keep us informed. Exceptional.
