Biography

Biography by Richie Unterberger & Sean Westergaard
In his brief four-year reign as a superstar, Jimi Hendrix expanded the vocabulary of the electric rock guitar more than anyone before or since. Hendrix was a master at coaxing all manner of unforeseen sonics from his instrument, often with innovative amplification experiments that produced astral-quality feedback and roaring distortion. ... 5.0 out of 5 stars May This Be Love? 20 Sep 2003
Format:Audio CD
With a debut album of this caliber, it blew to peices the first workings of the other great guitarists of the time. This album infact is so good, that its songs such as Foxy Lady, Purple Haze, Hey Joe, Fire, Red House, Are You Experienced and The Wind Crys Mary are some of the most commonly assosiated to Jimi Hendrix, despite his fairly large catalogue of guitar-excellence. The album as a whole has a love at first sight appeal which intensifies every listen. The album itself is mixed very well; each song flows perfectly to the next. Intrestingly, the album is full of mixed styles of music from the blues of Red House and his own style of blues, Manic Depression, to unique psychedelic experimentation of Are You Experienced and Third Stone From The Sun to funky rock with Purple Haze and Fire. Giving all this, one would expect the feel of the album to change drastically as it progressed. This is not the case, for the album feels as one perfect blend culminating to become one of the finest listening experiences you shall ever have. This perfectly crafted album shall not dissapoint and is an essential album to be placed in any collection.

I simply could have not resist the temptation to buy yet another edition of Jimi Hendrix Experience first album, newly repackaged by Sony Music. What a disappointment. Not the music, of course.

Are You Experienced is no doubt one of the most important albums in rock history. In 1967 the music and sounds on LP might have as well come from another planet or dimension.

It is the quality of sound and production of new edition I find unsatisfactory.

The "new" remastered edition sounds exactly the same as the MCA "Experience Hendrix" edition from 1997. Even the booklet is more or less the same, with only minor amendments in text and outlay.

The sound of this edition from 1997 (or 2010 if you want), though remastered by original engineer Eddie Kramer, is in my firm belief notably inferior to the previous Polydor remaster edition from 1993. The 1993 remaster simply sounds clearer and more balanced with less distortion (and I am not talking about Jimi's interventions, of course). The new edition even seems to contain production faults (like for example a strange change in the color of the sound in the last 12 seconds of the Red House).

Moreover, 1993 edition booklet contained great background stories and explanations of each of the album tracks by Jimi, Noel, Mitch and Chas which is sadly absent from the newer editions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ten Stars! 26 Oct 2006
Format:Audio CD
A truly stunning album, easily one of the best first efforts by any group, any time.

There's not much to be said apart from that, but the musicianship and songs are marvellous. Mitch's drumming is superb throughout and Noel's under-rated bass playing is solid but inventive.

Hendrix never really surpassed this in terms of its freshness and general impact, although he steadily grew as a musician after its release. The variety on the album is unsurpassed, except by The Beatles: jazz (Third Stone from the Sun); blues (Red House); R&B soul (Fire, Remember), even a hard rock waltz (Manic Depression) and a surf song (May This Be Love).

There are two re-issues of this album around. The best has the original UK running order, starting with Foxy Lady, and the six bonus tracks (Hey Joe, Purple Haze, etc) at the end of the CD. It also has the original UK cover, which is a bit daggy.

The other issue has the US running order, which has Purple Haze as its first track, and then the six bonus tracks (Red House, Can You See Me, etc) at the end. This has the 'fish eye' cover, which is more suited to the music.

You get the same songs, but the UK issue has the running order as Hendrix intended. Both versions have the same sound, remastered by Eddie Kramer, Jimi's original engineer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Indispensable 1 Oct 2010

First listened to this album when I was 15 (now 41). I have since listened to thousands of hours of music in other genres and wondered if this album would still have the same powerful effect on me that it did all those years ago. Needless to say it did. There are only a few records this statement applies to: you must have this in your music collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars FOR COLLECTORS & TRAINSPOTTERS 22 July 2008
Format:Audio CD
DISC ONE has to be worth 5 stars alone - it's actually a reissue of the deleted MCA Remaster of "Are You Experienced", unique in that it uses the American "Smash Hits" version of Red House, currently not available anywhere else and arguably better than its counterpart.

DISC TWO contains over an hour's worth of outtakes not officially available anywhere else either. Fascinating listening, though perhaps not recommended for the casual fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Have you experienced the Experience? 13 Mar 2009
Format:Audio CD
If votes are cast for the greatest debut album in rock music, then this might well win it. Today, in 2009, although its 60s themes sound dated, the sound does not. Imagine what it must have sounded like when it was new and unfamiliar!
From the opening musical orgasm of Foxy Lady (the greatest use of feedback in rock), to the final returning chiming rythm of Are You experienced, this album is simply astonishing. Little wonder that such guitar alumini as Clapton and Beck felt like shutting up shop when they first heard Hendrix. Each time I listen to this record a different song is my favourite - even the filler of Remember on occasions!
So long was the shadow cast by this record that in some respects Hendrix was forever trapped by it. Although both Axis Bold As Love and Electric Ladyland do different things, the spinetingling of Foxy Lady stuck to him to the end of his life. And further, With this album he unknowingly gave birth to heavy metal, although compared to this that particular genre is dead on arrival.
No, this recording bears all the hallmarks of genius - emotional death and variety, unparralleled technical ability, vast imagination, and most difficult of all, making new and frankly, frighteningly difficult bits of guitar playing sound like they are obvious and quite easy. Just a couple of favourites - the destruction of Earth and its debris floating off into space at the end of Third Stone from The Sun; and the supreme blues soloing on Red House. When it came to the guitar Hendrix had it all - just think, today nearly forty years after his death there are still things that nobody knows how he did.
