Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

Arctic Silver 5 uses three unique shapes and sizes of pure silver particles to maximize particle-to-particle contact area and thermal transfer.Arctic Silver 5 contains over 88% thermally Conductive filler by weight. In addition to micronized silver, Arctic Silver 5 also contains sub-micron zinc oxide, aluminum oxide and boron nitride particles. These thermally-enhanced ceramic particles improve the compound's performance and long-term stability. Arctic Silver 5 does not contain any silicone. The suspension fluid is a proprietary mixture of advanced polysynthetic oils that work together to provide three distinctive functional phases. As it comes from the tube, Arctic Silver 5's consistency is engineered for easy application. During the CPU's initial use, the compound thins out to enhance the filling of the microscopic valleys and ensure the best physical contact between the heatsink and the CPU core. Then the compound thickens slightly over the next 50 to 200 hours of use to its final consistency designed for long-term stability. (This should not be confused with conventional phase change pads that are pre-attached to many heatsinks. Those pads melt each time they get hot then re-solidify when they cool. The viscosity changes that Arctic Silver 5 goes through are much more subtle and ultimately much more effective.) Arctic Silver 5 was formulated to conduct heat, not electricity.

5.0 out of 5 stars Would highly recommend for performance laptops., 8 Aug 2008

If your laptop is overheating and cutting out or the fans are on at 100% the majority of the time I would recommend this product. After installing the latest graphics drivers for my Dell XPS M1710 and buying the game Mass Effect, my laptop suffered with frequent overheats and noisy performance from the fans running at maximum. As a temporary solution I used ice blocks underneath the laptop to provide cooling which proved rather effetive. However these were inconvenient, awkward and only delayed overheating.

To carry out maintenance on the cooling system on my laptop I used the following:

    - Can of Compressed air
    - Solvent to clean off old thermal compount (rubbing alcohol is fine)
    - Arctic silver to replace old thermal compound
    - Lint free cloth (the same you would use to clean your glasses with)

After thoroughly blowing out all of the dust on the radiator fins of the cooling assembly I cleaned off the old thermal compound on the CPU, GPU and coprocessor and replaced it with arctic silver (the coprocessor uses a praffin wax pad as the thermal compound, I replaced it with arctic silver). After this I put it all back together and not only did it stop overheating when playing Mass Effect, the fans didn't even go to 100% speed. A huge improvement. My laptop was 2 years old when I did this and the old thermal compound on the CPU and GPU was definitely in need of replacement as it seemed to be breaking up. When applying this make sure you follow the instructions from Arctic Silver's site as applying it incorrectly will dramatically reduce its effectiveness.

5.0 out of 5 stars Arctic Silver Thermal Paste, 9 Jun 2009
By Pete17 "pete17" (Sheffield UK) - See all my reviews
I cleaned the CPU and heatsink surfaces off with the 2 bottle arctic cleaner kit, works a treat.
I applied the grease as directed, Make sure you seat the heatsink firmly on the motherboard and that its fixed down securely or (as I did the chip and heatsink aren't together and the safety cut out "CPU temp incorrect" cuts in before the boot up is half way through. The CPU survived!
Once I had looked at the pegs that secure the heatsink to the motherboard I realised I was installing them in the release position and they weren't holding. The sink should be rigid when properly seated.
CPU was running 60-85 before, now 45 after!
Previously i'd had CPU at 90, the heatsink top was completley caked in dust, solid layer, on vaccuuming off sorted to 45.
I use ASUS PC Probe II to monitor, its a free download.
I found that when its running at lower temp the whole system seems more stable

5.0 out of 5 stars Cool
Laptop runs a lot cooler now (as opposed to scorching hot to the hands) even though I switched to a CPU that builds more heat.
