The marketing department for film distribution company Lionsgate deserve a healthy bonus in their wage packets at the end of this month. Their cover art for this TV movie of the week `Arctic Blast' promises famous monuments such as The Golden Gate Bridge caked in crippling snowfall, the surrounding civilization petrified with freezing temperatures, telling of an epic tale for survival against the odds on the scale of The Day After Tomorrow.

What you have instead is Stargate SG1's Michael Shanks tearing around coastal Australia pursued at various times by a budget CGI Ice Storm and a man standing just behind the camera with a surplus of dry ice that he is desperate to make use of. Our intrepid hero Jack Tate(Michael Shanks), an expert in his field and a maverick in his career - constantly at odds with his immediate supervisors - believes he has a theory to explain the baffling occurrences of an extreme drop in temperature that have cropped up around the globe. The meteorological authorities dismiss his interpretation of the data and proceed with their own investigation despite Jack's pleas. The senior department's ignorance conveyed via veteran actor Bruce Davison wandering around a plot of rented office space with a cell pressed to his ear.

Jack is further burdened by impending divorce proceedings (!), alienation from his teenage brat of a daughter (!!) and his diabetic co-worker having forgotten to bring her spare supply of insulin to the office that day (!!!). Can Jack Tate traverse the sudden catastrophic plunges in temperature? Rescue his marriage? Restore his daughter's respect for him? Acquire the last vial of insulin from the chemist?...and...(gasp!) finally convince the government to accept that he is a flawed genius and try his plan for salvation instead???

This is a Standard disaster formula story with the standard disaster formula characters and the obligatory premise introduction. Yep we destroyed the ozone it was the only thing protecting us from the coldest place on earth (fifty to a hundred kilometers above), well maybe with the exceptions of Jack's wife (Alexandra Davies) and Jack's brat (Indiana Evans.) Now toss in an eclipse and only Jack Tate (Michael Shanks) sees the "hole" problem and hopefully the solution.

In the end will they listen to Jack's solution? In the end will they learn to work with Mother Nature? In the end will Jack's cutie co-worker, Zoe (Saskia Hampele) get Jack or be left out in the cold? Will we ever get tired of these mediocre disaster movies? (Not me)

This is not a great movie but it's not that bad either! I for one found the race-against-time element exciting and any chance to see Michael Shanks looking gorgeous is a plus!
If you're looking for other Michael Shanks films, check out his website. Can't recommend "The Bouquet" highly enough if you're female! Can't recommend the series "Saving Hope" highly enough either. Get a multi-region dvd player and order through his website and amazon so that the charity Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada gets a donation from your purchase.

Michael shanks gives a good performance in this movie. For lovers of these type of movies it can be forgiven for not making the emmies as it has all the action and suspense of a great watch. Excellent

The worst film i have ever had the misfortune to watch. Abysmal acting and special effects presumably under the instruction of a retarded monkey. Absolute TOSH.

An all too familiar take on Day After Tomorrow and I have a soft spot for Michael Shanks , it also is not a bad price for an hour or more entertainment.

Sorry to say this did not live up to expectations. Bought it for Michael Shanks and the environmental message but was disappointed. Special effects had my guests cringing.
