Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

Netbooks are handy machines, but they are in effect just scaled down laptops. The Archos 9 PC tablet, however, is a true evolution in portable computing as it's form and design breaks the rules of conventional laptop design.

Sleek and shiny enclosure for a sharp screen

At first, all you see is the magnificent touch screen. It is sharp, precise, and intuitive - so much so that typing on the virtual keyboard is totally effortless. The thinness of this device is quite remarkable; the edges fan out from an already thin structure. Combined with a light weight you can easily carry it with you anywhere and use it at any time. Can you really have up to 80 movies stored on something so small?. With the built in 60Gb hard drive of course you can.

Smart features for intuitive use

The Archos 9's controls are ergonomically placed for comfortable and natural use. On the right, an optical trackpoint for finger navigation replaces the big touchpad of a laptop to ensure you can precisely point to any position on your screen. On the left, screen brightness, WiFi control and left/right mouse buttonss complement the virtual keyboard, so that your regular mouse controls aren't left aside. When you want smart info that pops-up under web links or need to right click on something, it's just as easy as on a PC. That's just one of the many differences from earlier tablet computers.

Built in stand for the perfect viewing angle

The Archos 9 features the trademark two-position leg-stand, to provide you with the perfect angle for using the PC tablet. The upper position is best for viewing videos on the go, surfing the web or reading, while the lower position is ideal when you need to type memos or web addresses, send an email or chat with your friends.

4.0 out of 5 stars More tablet PC than media tablet. 20 Jun 2010
By Spanner
Amazon Verified Purchase
Love all things Archos and the 9 did not disapoint. The 7 and 5 are better media players but if you value the Internet experience this may be for you.
Boot is no slower than you would expect for a device running windows and the touch screen is responsive. All in all a stunning piece of kit and I am already the envy of the non ipad toting office dwellers.

Only real gripe is the lack of an accellerometer. Very last year.

3.0 out of 5 stars Change my opinion... 24 Jan 2010
what I have written in the past...

If you see the specs it seems ok but in reality this is a very slow machine.
So slow it becomes useless. I bought it for using it in my bed but it takes so much time to do a simple thing I returned back to my notebook. It takes a lot of time to boot, a lot of time to load even internet explorer and so on...
I also tried to put google chrome but it goes up to 100% CPU... Also the on screen keyboard is not so usefull.
Very good idea but not good implementation...
i'll wait for Apple Tablet...

Solution...
I have downloaded all new drivers and stuff from archos, deleted all the old ones and installed all the new.
Also I have replaced the on screen keyboard with the new one. Also I have installed all new upgrades for Windows 7 from Microsoft.
Now the machine has a good speed (not perfect) but it is like a normal netbook. I also bought a wireless keyboard and mouse for in house work.

2.0 out of 5 stars Review Archos 9 18 Sep 2010
By CW
I spend time to write this review to warn everyone from buying the Archos 9.

1) The Archos 9 with the operating system WIndows 7 basic does not do its job, the performance is extremely bad. A computer with 1GB of RAM may perform with Windows XP but not with Windows Vista or Windows 7. Archos has ignored this fact and should have never delivered a tablet pc with a set-up like that, the worst performance of a computer since I used my old AMIGA 30 years ago.
Example: Opening the Firefox browser can take up to ten seconds or longer

2) Running programs can be a time consuming troublesome experience especially when it's about typing text using the onscreen keypad.
Example: When using an internet browser and typing of text is required (and that's often the case) then most of the time the onscreen keypad has to be moved around to ensure one actually can see the message box and typing the text into the required browser field box. (This applies to many other programs like email, word, excel and so on).

3) To overcome my first disappointment with the Archos 9, I decided to format the hard drive and installed Windows XP pro. To find suitable and working drivers for the Archos 9 (with 1.2GHZ processor-build since June 2010) is almost impossible, After 4 weekends and many hours searching on the internet I managed to collect all working drivers for Win XP, sadly Archos support did not help at all, ignoring my request to provide drivers for Windows XP and telling me to use Windows 7 (in other words they told me off saying "how dare you to use WIN XP").

4) After all the drivers have been installed, all hardware working the performance of the Archos 9 can be measured and compared with a small Netbook, Now at least applications can be run and started without getting a cup of coffee between. Nevertheless the use of the onscreen keypad is still very difficult and time consuming and I simply cannot get used to it. To do actually some work with the Archos 9, I had to buy an external usb keyboard, a usb mouse and an usb-port / three connectors. (Because the Archos has only one usb port). OK now the Archos 9 can be used almost like a netbook with the only back draw, the usb cables for the mouse, keyboard, usb hub and power supply are dangling over my feet, knees and tummy, I'm wondering why I did not buy a netbook on the first place.

Conclusion:
I will try to return the Archos 9 with the hope to get all my money back. I'm waiting for more tablet PC's to hit the market, at least now I know what to look for when buying a tablet PC (within the next two years when all of the manufacturers used the time to make a better product) As much I hate expensive Apple products, but to be fair to Apple, at least they have done their homework to 80%, Archos only 10%..........Archos should be ashamed for what they delivered

Help:
If you still want to buy the Archos 9 and try with WIN XP, To install Windows XP and drivers you will need an USB Port with at least 3 docks, a usb mouse, a usb keyboard and a 2MB USB memory stick (not 4,8,16GB that's essential) If someone out there needs my help, contact me, Kind regards, Claus.
