Amazon.co.uk Review

The Archos Jukebox 6000 answers the major criticism levelled at MP3 players, that of storage space. With a 6GB internal hard drive the Jukebox can store around 100hrs of CD-quality music (128kbps). It also has the advantage of doubling as a portable USB hard drive.

When you first open the box it is essential that you charge the unit fully before proceeding with any other tasks. Failure to do so will cause problems, such as the drive locking up your PC. The Jukebox comes with a mains adaptor, carry case, earphones, driver disc and USB lead. Once charged, installation is straightforward, simply a matter of following the brief instruction manual. The Jukebox appears within your PC as an additional drive, dynamically assigned a letter, which you can then drag and drop files onto. Software is provided for creation and manipulation of MP3 files in the form of MusicMatch. The player itself is compact, rugged, but still on the heavy side. The audio quality is poor through the supplied earphones and we would suggest replacing these at your earliest opportunity. The menu navigation on the backlit LCD display can be cumbersome, though the use of playlists does help, as does judicious searching on the Internet, which reveals some handy menu shortcuts that the manual fails to mention. Hopefully the firmware upgradeability of the device will be put to good effect to iron out some of these niggles.

The Archos Jukebox 6000 is not a perfect solution, but its combination of features at a great price make it well worth considering. --J Weston

Product Description

The palm-sized Archos Jukebox 6000 has a sleek design that will have you listening to your music collection in style. With a whopping storage capacity of 6GB, you can listen to more than 100 hours of MP3 music at 128 Kbps. It also doubles as a USB hard drive, with up to a 1,150 Kbps sustained transfer rate. Truly palm sized, the Jukebox 6000 measures 4.5 inches tall, 3.2 inches wide, and 1.3 inches deep.

The Jukebox 6000 features a proprietary shock protection system that senses any sudden drop of the drive and automatically parks the read heads to a safe landing area before the drive hits the ground. Four thick rubber pads in the corners further cushion shocks, and a 2 MB read-ahead buffer stores from 30 to 100 seconds of music to prevent interruptions caused by shocks or unbalance.

MP3 and WAV file formats are supported, and Archos plans to provide the latest firmware upgrades for additional digital audio formats via downloading from its Web site. MusicMatch software (for PC and Mac) comes bundled with the Jukebox 6000.

The Archos Jukebox 6000 features dual stereo line-in and line-out jacks, an LCD backlit screen, stereo headphones, a carrying pouch, USB connector cable, and an AC adapter (for recharging the 4 AA NiMh batteries, which provide up to 8 hours of playback).

Important note to customers: The Archos Jukebox 6000 requires a USB connection to your computer. It is compatible with Windows 98, Me and 2000. It is also compatible with USB-enabled Macs running Mac OS 8.6 or higher. Windows 95 and Windows NT are not supported.

I saw the Archos player being advertised and thought what the hell...lets try it. I opened the box and low and behold the smallest large capacity mp3 player I had seen. Previous to this I had the PB Jukebox whic had 4 gigs but was waay to big to carry around.

I was impressed, and still am with this product. However, on the downside...you can see why this is such a cheap product...little expense was put into durability of the jukebox. Made from cheap plastic on the outside I can already see it falling apart in a couple of months.

The firmware seems ok, but user friendliness is lacking in some areas...you don't want to be fiddling about with it for half an hour trying to find the song you want now do you?

Overall, this machine is worth it. I reccomend those with large mp3 collections to get it for those long trips where lack of luggage is essential. Otherwise, if you have a smaller collection (say only 2 or 3 gigs) then I reccomend you dont - the reason for this is the quality of the product (sound quality, song access speed etc) is not as good as some of the other, less capacity mp3 players).

glitchy jukebox 25 July 2001

good toy but so many gltches - doesn't support playback of 320kps mp3s - it continuously skips when you try. there's no way of creating playlists without a computer which is a shame - dont believe the 'regular firmware updates' cuz they never show up on time and when they finally do they never solve all the problems...the archos support is the worst - if you live in europe you have to send your questions in french which is not that helpful when you dont speak it....the player has also wiped itself clean on 3 occasions, so prolly not such a good idea to keep any important data on it. shame some other company didn't think of it first cuz archos aren't much cop... buy at own risk!!!

I like this product. I have used it for data back-up from my laptop while on the move. But the main use I get out of it is in the car. Fitted with a casette adaptor I can drive to my parents house 200 miles away and not have to change a tape or CD. With shuffle play in a directory, or a playlist, you can concentrate on driving.
The first upgrade was easy to download onto it. I am looking forward to the second one as it has resume play - good for talking books.
Yes - the build is a bit tacky, and I have sent my wife's one back as the screen broke after 2 weeks. However treated with a little care this product is a winner.
I would guess that this is not for the jogger, as it's heavy, but then a jogger would be knackered if he ran for the 8 hours of the battery life!
