Excellent Player - with a few foibles, 19 Aug 2006
This review is from: Archos AV700 40GB HD MPEG4 Video Player/Recorder (Electronics)
Picture Quality: I've seen people complain about the picture quality - for me it is perfectly good. When recording off tv at 2500 (the maximum) the picture quality is superb. I've been recording at 1000 (second lowest) to save file space and it's a perfectly fine picture. For the tv rips I've transferred on to it the picture quality is just as good as on my PC/TV. Transferring Files: This is my only real gripe with the system - I've tried transferring about 50 video files (tv rips that I had on my PC) and despite the fact that they were mpeg4 .avi files only about 15 of them transferred straight over to the player. The good news though is that the player comes with a conversion utility that is extremely simple to use - it takes about 15 minutes per half hour episode to perform the conversion. So far 2 files have failed the conversion (due to a reported error in the file rather than incompatibility) - the documentation does point you to other web sites where you can get more sophisticated conversion tools so possibly they might have been able to cope with these 2 files, I haven't tried. So the bad side is that you can't guarantee being able to just dump all your files straight on to the player but the good side is that so far it's been able to convert every .avi and .mpeg type of file I've thrown at it so with a bit of extra effort you still end up with the files on your player. For me this is a bit of a niggle in terms of hassle, but the main thing is that you can get the files across. Connecting to TV: Extremely easy to do. Again the only slight niggle is that previously when I turned my tv on it automatically switched to the Sky signal. Now it stays on the aerial feed and I have to hit a couple of buttons on my tv remote to switch to the Sky feed. Just a minor point obviously. Battery Life: I played continual video on it and it lasted about 4 1/2 hours. Managed to get another battery for it from ebay for £20 for journeys when I need more than 4 1/2 hours. Haven't tested battery life with music yet. Buttons: Again I've seen people say that the buttons aren't very intuitive. Took about 5 minutes to get used to which buttons to press and when, but now there is no problem whatsoever. Ease of Use: Some of the screens are a little lacking in functions i.e you can't select multiple files to move from one folder to another. When you copy the video files from your PC to the player they go in the route rather than you being able to move them directly to a specific folder so you then have to move them manually on the player. Generally the interface is pretty good (and some of the problems may be due to my lack of knowledge of how best to do things at the moment). Overall: I've been extremely impressed with this player. Bit disappointed that the video files don't all just copy across but very happy that it seems able to play them all (with conversion). I have the 80Gb version and I would recommend going for that over the 40Gb if you can afford it.

Archos AV700 100G, 16 Aug 2005
By A Customer
This review is from: Archos AV700 40GB HD MPEG4 Video Player/Recorder (Electronics)
I have just bought the 100g model and am sooo glad I did. I have recorded most of my frequently watched DvDs onto it as well as all my music and photos. I suggest you use the higher bit rate at 2500ps to record your media. The images are very good indeed, though not quite as sharp as my TFT portable dvd player. I am not complaining as I have watched many hours of recorded films on it and flick between all my episodes of Black Adder and the latest blockbuster films. Each film at the highest bit ratetakes up about 2.3gb, so you can imagine how many films you can store on it. The best way to get media onto the Archos is by a hard connection from the dvd/tv into the Av IN connection of the Archos, it then converts it into divx. I tried using divx files on the pc and then dragdrop onto the Archos but the file size was to small and the quality was very poor. Also if you have a dvd file in Divx on your pc it might not load because of the Archos copyright protection. As I travel all the time it is really quite an amazing bit of kit and I would really reccommend it. Photos are ok but it does excell as an mp3 player as well as your film entertainer. I think you will be dissapointed with just 40g as I have used up 60gig just for my DvDs, of course you can record at the lower rate, though the images will not be as sharp. Also protect the screen and keep it in the protective case provided. Recording off the TV is easy and with very good results. Good luck. PS I only gave it 4 stars because nothing is perfect.Hope you find this a help

Is This A Jack Of All Trades And A Master Of None?, 15 July 2005
This review is from: Archos AV700 40GB HD MPEG4 Video Player/Recorder (Electronics)
I had high hopes for this piece of kit. I wanted to be able to store and play back DVD movies, TV recordings and photos, with the ability of being able to use it as a USB host being a major attraction. In essence I saw it as a replacement for my laptop when travelling. Initial impressions were good. It looked smart and pretty sleek - although the overall size and weight were imposing. I charged it up and began to try it out. My attempt to transfer a high quality recording of a recent 'Dr. Who' episode and the accompanying 'Dr. Who Uncovered' failed. A bit of investigative work revealed that, as the hard disk file system is FAT32, it will not handle files larger than 2Gb, I couldn't find any mention of this on the Archos pages describing the AV700 or on the technical specs page. It is only mentioned in the FAQ page where it explains that files over 2Gb have to be split. I then tried transferring some photos and used just four initially, all JPG files that have displayed fine on four different computers and yet two of these would not display. On looking at the photos that did display the reproduction, in my wife's (and my) estimation was pretty poor, with everything looking coarse and somewhat blurred. The viewing angle of the AV700 is also very narrow indeed and finally whilst the AV700 was attached to my desktop machine it caused a major crash. I didn't bother trying to transfer music or data to the unit and didn't get around to attaching my camera to it or using the TV docking station. If it wouldn't play DVD quality films or longer TV recordings without splitting them and would only display 50% of my photos (and then poorly) it wouldn't do what I wanted. If your needs are for lower quality video files, below 2Gb, music (but only MP3 files I believe) then this may well suit your needs but do think carefully about what you want and check the FAQ page on the Archos site - don't rely on their technical specs to give you the full picture.
