Manufacturer's Description

The Archos 605 generation 5 portable media player comes with a convenient WiFi feature, an attribute that offers the fastest and easiest way to access digital entertainment. You can use the built-WiFi capabilities of the Archos to download online media content from the Archos content portal: All you need is a usable WiFi connection, and you're good to start downloading (fees may apply). With the Archos in hand, for the first time you can download favourite movies, TV shows, and music wherever you are, without being tied to the PC or Mac. Other great features include a full-colour 4.3-inch touchscreen that crams in an amazing 800 x 480 picture resolution for superior picture quality, 4 GB of built-in flash memory, and multiple options for additional storage (the player accepts SD mini and SD micro memory cards).

With the Archos in hand you can download your favourite movies, TV shows, and music wherever you are .

Archos media player comes with photo viewing capabilities, supporting JPEG, BMP, and PNG files .
With full Internet access, the player's Opera browser plug-in offers Adobe Flash support, which lets you access and enjoy YouTube and other Web video sites on your Archos device. By using the player, you can view and post YouTube videos wherever you are with an active wireless connection. In addition to downloading media straight from the Archos content portal, you can stream and watch videos from your home PC or laptop. You can also record live TV or schedule a recording by using the integrated TV program guide available with the compatible DVR station (sold separately). For added video playback versatility, the player is compatible with MPEG4, AVI, and WMV video files. The player features robust music playback features, too. On-board music file playback capabilities support MP3, CBR, VBR, WMA, protected WMA, and WAV files. To help round out the player's multimedia superiority, the Archos even comes with photo viewing capabilities. JPEG, BMP, and PNG files are 100 percent compatible with the player, and the player can pull up PDFs for portable review -- an ideal means to take bigger documents or e-books in PDF format on the road with you. Because of the Archos's USB 2.0 compatibility, files can be quickly transferred to the device in the absence of a WiFi network connection. Charging the device can also be accomplished with an active USB connection. An AC adapter is sold separately for additional charging options. Other great features include mass storage capabilities, automatic firmware downloads, and a 3.5-millimeter headphone jack. With an advanced Li-Poly battery, the player supports up to 17 hours of continuous music playback and 5.5 hours of continuous video playback. Weighing in at a scant 5.29 ounces, the Archos generation 5 605 measures 4.8 by 3.2 by 0.6 inches.

3.0 out of 5 stars Shame about the poor software design 14 Jan 2008
I liked the quality of sound, and the ability to play back movies. But I didn't feel the user interface had been very well thought through. For example if you want to add to an existing playlist you have to first go into the playlist you want to add to by playing something from it. Otherwise it brings up the last playlist you used, and there's no option to choose the playlist you want via the menu system. Having got the right playlist in the playlist window, you can't just add to it and save because the only save option you get is for the default new playlist name the device displays by default. But you don't want to save it as a new playlist you just want to update the existing list. So you have to use the saveas option. But there is no display of the existing playlists to choose from, so you have to remember the name of the list you wanted to add to and put it in again. In practice for me being an old fart means writing it on a piece of paper first. This is the most frustrating example I found, but I feel it is representative of the generally usability of the device.

I generally agree with the other comments re having to buy add ons, and battery charging time, but having done my research up front I new about these issues.

Much worse than the above was to come. After a few days the "OK" (select) rocker button refused to work, and this though I'd hardly touched it having been mostly using the touch screen. So I tried to reset the device which led to it showing up an error stating that FAT32 system was in error. So I then tried to use the system recovery facility which brought up a tiny white screen with three of options which could only be actioned using the "OK" button. But this wasn't working so I was completely stuffed.

3.0 out of 5 stars Well... it's almost there. 3 Jan 2008
By Inchka
I'm new to archos, and I have to say the 605 WiFi was very impressive at first glance.

Apart from the base unit, (as you know from other reviews) you have to buy the plugins and at least the DVR station if you need to get any proper functionality out of it. You'll also need a second USB cable if you're planning to use the device at home and at the office, without having to carry the cable around with you.

Do watch out, if you accidentally undock it from the DVR station when it's recording, or unplug the USB when copying files, then you'll very likely need to re-install the whole operating system or figure out how to scan-disk; and it is hassle, and frustrating especially if you just recorded the last espisode of NCIS on the internal memory!

I just had mine back from repair (after having owned it for less than a month) because the OS refused to reinstall when the file system got corropted the fourth time. On arrival from repair it required a firmware update which now seems to have broken the wireless.

I also need to mention that it was a pain trying to get the plugins that I'd previsouly bought, to work with the repaired unit.

To conclude, it's very sweet when it works, but if you're looking for a gadget that "just works" then this isn't for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for portable movie watching (plus FAQs!) 23 May 2008
By MartinB
I was looking for a portable media player to comfortably watch movies while travelling and frankly this is near perfect for that purpose.

I researched a lot before buying and have learnt even more since so thought I would pass on the relevant key info as I see it. If you are trying to find information on a specific feature before you buy I recommend Googling for Archos Forums and checking out their FAQs.

In the box is the player itself, a USB adapter lead (there are no native USB ports on the player), earphones, a basic case and two stylus for the touch screen. Manuals are in PDF to read on the Archos itself.

Charging via USB is slow (10+ hours for full charge) and you get no power supply in the box. Ultimately you will probably need to buy an Archos dock. For example, the Battery Dock gives you extra battery life and comes with a power supply allowing much quicker charging (approx 4 hours full charge). You can buy 3rd party chargers cheaper but the Archos will only allow a fast charge through its own docks.

Realistic battery life for watching movies is 3-4 hours. With the Battery dock you are looking at 5-6 hours constant playtime.

You get no software included. The forums are best for help with transferring video on the Archos. Expect to use around 800MB for a nicely watchable, encoded 2 hour movie.

Extra memory through the SDHC slot integrates seamlessly with the 4GB internal memory and you can play video or music directly from it. The slot will take up to a 16GB card. Be aware not all SDHC cards will work, check the forums for compatible cards before buying.

The Wifi feature works without problems for me.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not recommended! 3 Jan 2008
I returned mine after just one day. As a previous poster mentioned, the file system gets corrupted (I always properly removed the device, so that was not the cause). It happened to me twice on the first day. After the first time I was a bit upset that I had lost all the media files I had just put on the device. After the second time it refused to repair itself and back it went. It was brilliant for the short time it did work: Amazing screen! But no good if it fails after less than 24 hours. It's a pity, because the specs are great and I loved it for a few hours..
