    I love this device, it's a fantastic video player, and a fantastic web browser (although you have to pay for additional licences for web browser and some codecs)... the WiFi works so much better than some other devices I've used.... the file manager is pretty usable... and the music player is nice enough. I would easily give it 5 stars, but there are some imperfections.

    1, No standard USB connector (need proprietary cable)
    2, No bluetooth (so you can't browse on the move unless there is a hotspot)
    3, As yet, the available plugins are very limited
    I would be say that it needs a calendar, an email client, a notepad,
    an SSH and/or RDP/VNC client and a few others at the very least
    (These may be available as software updates, however)
    4, I have seen it hand/reboot a few times unexpectedly.

    Overall, I'm very happy with it, but it could do so much more.

    This is an amazing little device. Its still a bit buggy, but really, the rest of its features more than makes up for this.
    You do need to have quite a bit of patience because in the end you can normally get over all problems after a bit of time.
    For example, my USB connection stopped being recognised by my computer but i fixed it by uninstalling my old ipod programs.
    I was going to send my Archos back after a week but kept it to try it out a bit more and managed to discover how everything worked and suddenly all the pieces of the jigsaw started to fit together.
    Sure its complicated, so dont expect to figure it all out ina few days, you wont!
    Some things to remember:
    1. Make sure you set the location and language. You might think its obvious, but even though it comes in English, its probably set to USA times, so this will mess up the TV scheduler for example.
    2. If the Archos is behaving stragely, just hold down the power button on it for 15 seconds so that it reboots, this usually fixes most problems.
    3. If you get the GEN5 dock (which is virtually essential) make sure you fit the Archos in it carefully with the attachment which comes with your archos (not the gen 5) on top. It can sometimes not slot in properly... practice makes perfect.
    4. If you use Sky + or Sky HD like me and want the Archos to record from it, disable the power saving option on the Sky+ setup menu and also set the Archos to Thomson receiver when setting up the infra red codes.
    5. When setting it up with your wifi, make sure you select 128 bit or 64 bit code before inputting the wep key, this will ensure you have the right number of characters to input

    I read as many reviews if this product as I could find and it looked good. I decided to buy one and received it on 6th December. From first use it locked up every time when coming out of standby needing a full reboot or reset to get it working again. I phoned Archos support (on a premium rate number) and was told that it shouldn't work this way and someone would contact me the following week. Nobody did so I had to phone them again. This time I was told it would have to go back for repair and they sent me an email detailing what to do. When it came back it still had the same fault. To compound the issue it was not returned in the original box (in which it had been sent), the proof of sale was not returned (which they asked for and said would be returned) and the unit had been damaged while with Archos. It now has a dint in the back of the case which could only be the result of a reasonable blow.
    I phone Archos again and explained the problem that had now turned into several problems. This time I was told this would have to go to head office and someone would contact me the following week. No one did. So, I have to phone them again. This time I speak to someone who unsympathectic, rude and offhand so I ask to speak with a supervisor or manager to be told 'no you can't' and 'you can hang on the phone all day if you want it will only cost you money, I don't care'.
    This kind of support is appalling. If you are sold a faulty device the company should go out of its way to rectify it. I will never buy a product from Archos again and could not recommend anyone else to.
    Oh by the way, it still doesn't work properly.

    The Archos 605 is a very capable media player. It is fairly robust device and has travelled with me without any problems. The software is good and the screen quality is brilliant, provided that the video is compressed correctly. It does, however, have its flaws. The Archos 605 only comes with a proprietary connection cable to connect it to the computer to transfer files, and this is also the only way to charge the device. To charge the device a separate dock (either a Gen 5 DVR Station or a MiniDock) has to be purchased and the wall charger as well (even the dock doesnt come with a power charger!) and if you want to connect using a standard mini-usb connection the dock is required for this as well! Also, extra money has to be paid for the web browser software and plug-ins to play mpeg2 video, DVD video (.vob files) and AAC audio. These software plug-ins should be part of the standard software. All in all, it is a very capable media player, but at over 250 it should come with at a minimum the extra software and the separate power charger. This is why it only gets 3 stars from me!
