Verified Purchase
I purchased this item at the start of May '09 . I received delivery within 4 days from Amazon, excellent start. opened the Archos and my first impressions were beautiful looking product. After charging the device I immediately registered my product with Archos and purchased the add-ons from Archos direct. I set up my wireless internet connection, again no problem and transferred some movies I have in various formats, they all played back perfectly and picture quality was crisp and sharp I thought to myself why are so many people giving Archos such poor reviews, afterall what could posssibly go wrong.....

Within 24 hrs just about everything that could possibly go wrong happened. First of all it suddenly failed to connect to my wireless broadband despite having initially done so. i tried resetting but to no avail, then it started to completely freeze then power off by itself for no reason and finally refused to playback the same movies it had initially played. I tried everything soft reboot followed by master reset but nothing worked. I sent an email to their "alleged" support service and recieved an automated response within seconds stating that their support team would be in contact within 48 hrs. I never heard anything back from them again to this day .I have since emailed their press relations office and euro info office and neither of these have bothered to communicate back either.
I have to say Amazon have been brilliant I have recieved a full refund and they reimbursed the rather expensive postal cost from Ireland thanks.
As for Archos I am still down the cost of the add-ons and their so called after sales is non existent and downright ignorant . NEVER AGAIN !

Why is it companies make such bad decisions? Don't the companies decision makers get paid 6 figure salaries?
Yes, I have an Archos 7.
Here is a run down from boot up:
You have to register and create and account with Archos to be able to use the Web and Web Radio(?)"plug-in". I now go to the internet to be able to watch episodes of THE OFFICE - it will not play any episodes - you get a blank space with a Flash 9 jpg. The Archos 7/Opera is suppose to support Flash 9 -but it doesn't work on many Flash 9 websites. Well -on to YouTube -YES it plays YouTube videos and very nicely I might add! I click on a The Office video... it says can not play this video -you need to download the "Podcast AAC" plug-in! So I click on the "Buy" button and I'm taken to a page that says "Coming Soon". I go to the Archos website and after a little of a struggle I find the Buy the plugins page. There is the "Podcast" plug-in FOR $19!!!!!
NEXT... I'll try to play some of my dvd movie files on my laptop.. WUPS - I need another plug-in to do this ANOTHER $19 -WOW that added $40 to the $439 I just paid for the Archos 7! Where is the $30 for three plug-ins that everyone talks about -NO WHERE TO BE FOUND. Oh well I'll see if I can buy the "HiDef Video" plug-in -- WUPS - the "Buy" button doesn't say Buy it says "Out of Stock" now that is interesting -a software plug-in that is Out of Stock! They ran out of software! Thats scary -what will that mean in the future?
What version of Linux is run on the Archos 5 and 7? Will we be able to install or download different apps of our choosing (like the Nokia N810)?
DVR Station will be another $99... WOW... I may be up to $600 if I keep this unit...
Now if us little people see the problems so easily (especially the $19 plug-ins CHOKE!!

I first brought my Archos 7 last November. In February the touch screen stopped working and it was sent back to Amazon under guarantee and i received a replacement with no hassle at all.I am a Lorry Driver and use my Archos when i am waiting at delivery points, which can be for a couple of hours so watching films and soaps on the 7inch screen is Magic. The extra plug-ins are a bit of a rip off so i will not be bothering with them, but you get a brilliant picture and can catch up on e-mails at wi-fi points around the country....In a word to me the Archos is MAGIC...

Let's get this straight - the Archos 7 is not a device for the faint-hearted. It's a full-on 'gadget', designed for the tech-savvy, who don't just want an iPod alternative. If you can accept this, you're in for a great ride.

First things first - this is a big, heavy device. You will not be taking this for a jog. I believe the screen size alone means this device is primarily designed for watching video and it excels at this. If you want a hybrid audio and video device that's a bit more pocketable go for it's smaller cousin, the Archos 5.

That being said, it's a great device to take on the move for watching movies, TV shows etc. It elicits gasps from friends and family whenever I fire it up and, paired with good speakers or headphones, is fantastic aurally and visually - you have to remember this costs roughly the same as a 16Gb iPod Touch but has TEN TIMES the storage and a much bigger screen.

I use Apple products every day. My computers at home and work are Macs and I've owned numerous iPods including the 1st gen Touch and an iPhone. Is the Apple interface better? Yes, no question, but the Archos isn't bad at all. But I'm bemused at the reviews on here berating Archos for making more money from plugins etc. For 30 Euros you can buy a plugin that allows this machine to play pretty much ANYTHING - MP3, AAC, WAV, AVI, DivX, MP4 etc etc. If you want to play anything other than MP4 video on an iPod Touch, forget it. The Apple model is designed around downloading video from iTunes - make no mistake. This can be both convenient and frustrating (trust me, I own an Apple TV).

As for extra money for DVR docks etc - so what? The iPod Touch doesn't come with a dock let alone DVR capabilities. Archos need to make money somehow!
