Biography

The Genesis of the Seventies was a very different group from the Genesis of the Eighties and the Nineties - although not as different as some people would like to think.

Most of those who picked up on Genesis during the Eighties as their succession of hits encircled the globe had only the haziest idea of what had gone before. “In the later years there were people coming to our ... Read more in Amazon's Genesis Store

In many ways this is a frustrating release. There's no doubt that the performance of "The Lamb" live is treasure trove indeed for the average Genesis fan. This performance is recorded in fantastic sound quality and the instrumentation is simply awesome - the atmosphere of the piece is arguably better than the studio release. One note of caution however is the suggestion that much of this was in fact recorded prior to this release and not on stage - the band members being concerned at their reputations not being enhanced by a "warts and all" release. In truth the Lamb shows were bedevilled by technical problems (I have the tapes to prove it!) so one can perhaps forgive the band if they have sought to sonically improve the performance.
Disc 3 is also of particular interest although for the life of me I cannot understand why other tracks recorded at the Rainbow gig are not included here. My old live tape has great versions of "Cinema Show" and, more interestingly, "Battle of Epping Forest" and I could scarcely believe that they had been omitted - particularly as Disc 4 is such a let down. I'm sorry but the very earliest Genesis stuff is pretty weak in my view and certainly does not warrant an entire disc. It is so unrepresentative of the overall Genesis canon and I would have much preferred a further disc of live tracks culled from the many professional recordings that are out there - Phil Collins himself has an extensive collection of them for a start!
A good release and well worth buying - it certainly beats the pants off Archive 2 - but one has to say that it could and maybe should have been even better still.

Well, what to say about this box set? It seems to me that because you're reading this, you must be interested in Genesis' early years. So just buy it. It's got everything: Lamb live, some of the great masterpieces of the Peter Gabriel - era played live, the odd tracks like 'Twilight Alehouse' (a real killer) or the edited Watcher of the Skies. Just for these three great dics alone it is advised to purchase this box set. But there's also a down side (sort of): The fourth cd contains demo versions of songs that eventually wound up on the band's first 2 albums, or magically disappeared. They are nice to listen to, but a bit soft and "twee" compared with the precvious discs.

As well as the four CDs, there is also an informative 80 page booklet included in this package. For true fans there is not much new in this booklet, nevertheless it is a nice-to-have. I read with some trepidation Tony Banks' comments about some of the tracks on CD4 being "copies of copies of what were not very good recordings in the first place". I need not have worried. They are all highly worthwhile and reasonable quality. Although CD4 is all from the early days 'Genesis To Revelation' era; they make very interesting listening. Over the last 20 years or so we have had so much brilliant stuff from this group that it is easy to overlook where they came from mucically. This collection rekindles old memories and reminds us of what has made them great from their earliest days.

Let me put my cards on the table: Genesis is my favourite band and Lamb lies down has been played more times than any other album I own- I still love it. So is this really worth the steep download price (or paying a significant secondhand price for the actual discs)? Initially I was unsure: the vocals to the live version of Lamb have clearly been re-recorded by Peter Gabriel- his 1997 voice is different from his 1974-75 voice. But if you love the Genesis with Gabriel era then unquestionably you have to buy this, for the sake of sides 1 & 2 alone. Peter's voice is still fantastic- for me alongside John Lennon as my favourite vocal artists. Just download Back in NYC to send a shiver down your spine. But it's everything else that makes this package so wonderful. The creativity of Phil Collins drumming is astonishing. Mike Rutherford's bass is quite forward in the mix so the musicality of his playing is evident to all. Steve Hackett's solo playing, whilst sparingly used, is truly electric. And you also realise how important Tony Bank's keyboards were to the group- there is no Genesis without his contribution which is at the heart of every song. If you have ever wondered what Genesis would have sounded if they had got back together then this is it.
Side 3 is great- OK it's contains about the millionth version of Firth of Fifth, but different and still worth having. Highlights are Stagnation and Twilight Alehouse. Side 4 less strong but it is sides 1-3 that matter most to me.
So thank you Genesis for this product. Thanks Peter Gabriel for adding your vocals. I was never able to see the band live in this format- but at least I can hear them afresh. Makes you wish...well that's another story!

The package splits into two sections; Archive live & studio cuts and demos going back to 1967 (discs 3 & 4) and a supposedly full concert performance from the Lamb Tour of 74/75.

Discs 3 & 4 are of passing interest; a curiousity, but not discs to occupy the CD player (or ipod) for any length of time.

The real interest is the "lamb" concert. There are a number of unofficial lamb recordings out there in various states of completeness and sound quality. No such issues here then! The sound quality is first rate and this release should have put paid to any further interest in any unofficial offerings.

However - the concert appears to be edited (certainly some of the Gabriel narative is missing); the sound levels are not consistent between some of the tracks (download version) so that the sound level jumps between pieces that should be seamless, thus ruining the effect of listening to a complete live event; the final song (It) is faded out before the end and omits any audience appreciation and there are no encore tracks. On top of that, the CD version sells at an extortionate £90. All in all, the producers have done a pretty good job of ruining what could have been a fabulous product - well done!

One other whinge. Why is there never any product literature, sleevenotes or artwork available as part of the download?
