Biography

The Genesis of the Seventies was a very different group from the Genesis of the Eighties and the Nineties - although not as different as some people would like to think.

Most of those who picked up on Genesis during the Eighties as their succession of hits encircled the globe had only the haziest idea of what had gone before. “In the later years there were people coming to our concerts who didn’t… Read more in Amazon's Genesis Store

Product Description

From Amazon.com

The Who needed two rock operas to reach their apex, but Genesis climaxed first time out with The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. On the live version which takes up half of this four-CD box, the Peter Gabriel-fronted incarnation goes out with a bang, dressing up its art rock in black leather and brass knuckles. Disc 3's live renditions of "Supper's Ready" and "Dancing with the Moonlit Knight" are nearly as powerful, while Disc 4's demos from the embryonic late-'60s lineup offer a pleasing glimpse into the group's folk and psychedelic roots. Expansive yet muscular, this compelling set shows Gabriel and company paving the way for a generation of pop explorers right up through Radiohead. All nostalgia should sound this vital. --Billy Grenier

In many ways this is a frustrating release. There's no doubt that the performance of "The Lamb" live is treasure trove indeed for the average Genesis fan. This performance is recorded in fantastic sound quality and the instrumentation is simply awesome - the atmosphere of the piece is arguably better than the studio release. One note of caution however is the suggestion that much of this was in fact recorded prior to this release and not on stage - the band members being concerned at their reputations not being enhanced by a "warts and all" release. In truth the Lamb shows were bedevilled by technical problems (I have the tapes to prove it!) so one can perhaps forgive the band if they have sought to sonically improve the performance.

Disc 3 is also of particular interest although for the life of me I cannot understand why other tracks recorded at the Rainbow gig are not included here. My old live tape has great versions of "Cinema Show" and, more interestingly, "Battle of Epping Forest" and I could scarcely believe that they had been omitted - particularly as Disc 4 is such a let down. I'm sorry but the very earliest Genesis stuff is pretty weak in my view and certainly does not warrant an entire disc. It is so unrepresentative of the overall Genesis canon and I would have much preferred a further disc of live tracks culled from the many professional recordings that are out there - Phil Collins himself has an extensive collection of them for a start!

A good release and well worth buying - it certainly beats the pants off Archive 2 - but one has to say that it could and maybe should have been even better still.

Well, what to say about this box set? It seems to me that because you're reading this, you must be interested in Genesis' early years. So just buy it. It's got everything: Lamb live, some of the great masterpieces of the Peter Gabriel - era played live, the odd tracks like 'Twilight Alehouse' (a real killer) or the edited Watcher of the Skies. Just for these three great dics alone it is advised to purchase this box set. But there's also a down side (sort of): The fourth cd contains demo versions of songs that eventually wound up on the band's first 2 albums, or magically disappeared. They are nice to listen to, but a bit soft and "twee" compared with the precvious discs.

As well as the four CDs, there is also an informative 80 page booklet included in this package. For true fans there is not much new in this booklet, nevertheless it is a nice-to-have. I read with some trepidation Tony Banks' comments about some of the tracks on CD4 being "copies of copies of what were not very good recordings in the first place". I need not have worried. They are all highly worthwhile and reasonable quality. Although CD4 is all from the early days 'Genesis To Revelation' era; they make very interesting listening. Over the last 20 years or so we have had so much brilliant stuff from this group that it is easy to overlook where they came from mucically. This collection rekindles old memories and reminds us of what has made them great from their earliest days.
