Review

"His classic introduction to the basic elements of architecture has served as a reference for both students and practicing architects for 30–plus years. Illustrated throughout with b&w diagrams and renderings, the third edition includes expanded sections on circulation, light, views, and site context; new material on environmental factors and building codes; and contemporary examples of form, space, and order." (Book News, February 2008)

Product Description

A superb visual reference to the principles of architecture

Now including interactive CD–ROM!

For more than thirty years, the beautifully illustrated Architecture: Form, Space, and Order has been the classic introduction to the basic vocabulary of architectural design. The updated Third Edition features expanded sections on circulation, light, views, and site context, along with new considerations of environmental factors, building codes, and contemporary examples of form, space, and order.

This classic visual reference helps both students and practicing architects understand the basic vocabulary of architectural design by examining how form and space are ordered in the built environment.? Using his trademark meticulous drawing, Professor Ching shows the relationship between fundamental elements of architecture through the ages and across cultural boundaries. By looking at these seminal ideas, Architecture: Form, Space, and Order encourages the reader to look critically at the built environment and promotes a more evocative understanding of architecture.

In addition to updates to content and many of the illustrations, this new edition includes a companion CD–ROM that brings the book′s architectural concepts to life through three–dimensional models and animations created by Professor Ching.

This book is essentially a picture dictionary of architecture.

It is packed with line drawings of the best quality. It is very didactic and very straightforward.

The focus is on world architecture, so that every type of building gets a share of the book, and nothing is unduly left aside.

Essential to understand the basics of the concepts and rationale of architectural practice, thinking and theory.

Of value to both connoisseurs and practitioners.

The Architect-wanabe in me wanted to learn more about just "Form, Space and Order". I must that I wasn't disappointed: I appreciate both the presentation and the information in itself. Sure, you won't become a Master only by adding this title to your collection, but there's a lot to reflect about all along these pages. The CD inside is a good visual résumé of it all, so just take your time to practice the different steps, one after another...

I also read some complains about Mr Ching drawing style, which maybe wasn't the best ever, according to some kind of experts (!?) I must say that I am very impressed by most of his drawings and that I would love to have even a small part of his skill!

The depth of knowledge shared in this book makes it a must have for anyone who is studying Architecture, Spatial or Interior Design, Planning or Town Development. This book should have been on my book list - but wasn't!
So glad I found it - Thanks to friend Caz who told me about it.

Architectural nonsense
Not very useful. Pretentious nonsense. We sent it back.
Not at all practical. Just theoretical, pretending to be high level.
