At first glance this appears to be a very complex game but after watching the tutorials on the internet (recommended) the game made more sense. The gameplay is very logical and offers players opportunity to plan and execute a wide variety of strategies to foil their opponents. The quality of all the components in the game is of a high standard and offers good value for money (if you shop around for a bargain) considering how much is provided within the game. The game is a stand alone game, not requiring additional booster sets or add-ons and can be played straight from the box. It combines elements of fantasy board games with collectable card games but, unlike the latter where players have to draw and play cards from a deck, Mage Wars allows you to store and play any of your cards from a 'spell book'. This adds a new dimension to gaming, providing players with the opportunity to select spells appropriate to developing situations in the game and gives the feel of actually having full control of the mage/wizard they have chosen to play. With only minor assistance my 9 year old stepdaughter has understood the game concept and can plan strategies using the simple symbols on all game components. I would highly recommend this game and, although it will probably appeal most to those with a leaning towards fantasy card games, the logical game play and variety of possible strategies make it suitable to anyone who thinks they can out think an opponent. A brilliant effort from Bryan Pope & Arcane Wonders.
