Steve Winwood - Revolutions

Biography

Winwood was just a teenager when he rocketed into the international spotlight as the prodigious singer of the Spencer Davis Group (which also featured his brother Muff on bass). The blues and R&B-influenced rock of “Gimme Some Lovin’” and “I’m a Man” stood among the leading hits at the peak of the British Invasion, Winwood’s singing drawing ... Arc of a diver was Steve Winwood's second solo offering after his eponmynous debut. Moving well away from his earlier work with Traffic, Blind Faith and the Spencer Davis Group, Arc of a Diver has a very early 80's feel to it, with 'electronics' in abundance, though its no less impressive because of that. The album kicks off with a real tour de force "While you see a chance" is a rousing number that was the obvious single from the album. In a sense its almost a 1980's form of gimme some lovin...catchy melody, memorable lyrics and very effective use of keyboards (indeed, Winwood plays virtually all the instruments himself on this album). Second hand woman and the title track Arc of a Diver are fairly mediocre, but "slowdown sundown" and "Dust" though in a similar vein are appreciably better, showcasing Winwoods soulfull vocals well. That leaves us with "Spanish Dancer" and "Night Train", alongside "While you see a chance", the stand out tracks on this album. Curiously both of these songs are best listened to at night. Night train when you're on the road...its the one track which showcases Winwood's vastly underated guitar work...and moves alongs brilliantly the faster your going. I first heard Spanish Dancer in a record shop some 20 years ago and it immediately made me stop in my tracks...it still has that effect. The sound is atmospheric and very underwater...there is something very marine about it, and comes closet to matching the albums catchyly designed cover...its a track that can certainly get you in the mood! yet its not romantic as such more mysterious. Of Steve Winwood's solo efforts this was probably the best....

I went back in time to buy this, as i loved all his early stuff with Spencer Davis. But I'm a blues fan, and wasn't sure how he'd find his way in the wider world of music. This CD is good stuff, but in my heart of hearts I still prefer his bluesy rock, as seen when playing more recently with Clapton, another one who floundered, in my opinion, before returning to his roots. don't get me wrong, though: this is a strong CD and well worth a listen. Eight out of ten.

Owned this album in all formats since it came out. Looses a star (for me) because some of the tracks aren't all that. However, three of them are always on my rotating playlist. If you're looking for a review going on about "rich keyboard tones" or "soulful expressive vocals" I expect they'll be one further back, but for me this is one for in the background, and it didn't cost that much

Nothing like as good as 'High Life' or 'Roll with it' but an interesting hint of what was to come in future recordings.Needs to be listened to several times to get into it

Having been fortunate enough to catch Steve Winwood recently on his current tour (a live experience I strongly recommend), I opted to pick up a couple of remasters of some solo albums I didn't previously own on original vinyl. First released on new year's eve 1980, this was Steve Winwood's second solo venture after his 1977 debut and is in the true sense a real "solo" album in that everything you hear was performed by Winwood. Recorded at his private studio in Gloucestershire, the album is a considerable stylistic departure from much of Winwood's output from the prior decade: marked by an abundance of electronic instrumentation, the release is characterised by a contemporary aesthetic which continued through to the 1982 follow-up "Talking Back to the Night." Winwood's soulful organ playing and distinctive reedy synth leads are prominent sounds within the work. All content considered I found this a strong album musically, personal favourites being the synth-driven hit "While You See A Chance" which peaked in the top 10; the up-tempo "Second-Hand Woman", which boasts a great funky bass-line; and :Spanish Dancer." If you too find this album to your satisfaction, I strongly recommend additional purchase of it's successor "Talking Back to the Night" (my original Japanese LP of which is fortunately still in fine fettle and plays perfectly, a great edition for the vinyl enthusiasts among us): a 1982 album which continued in this style and aesthetic, in my opinion slightly exceeding "Arc of a Diver" somewhat in that I found a greater proportion of it more instantly memorable. Having said that, they're both excellent albums, and if you like one I'd be very surprised if you didn't like the other.Read more ›
