Having lived and worked in the area of Kabuki-cho, where many of these photos were taken, the images dredge up the feelings associated with that life. The closeness of the girls, the constant waiting, and the ultimate vacuum at the core of it all are suggested strongly in the work. The monotony of sexual acts are interspersed with the occasional, surprising image of normality which have all the more impact from their positioning. I would have liked to see more images of the men who control the parlours etc, as they make just as interesting a study as the girls and the sex acts themselves. The book explains the complexities and contradictions of the sex industry far better than a 1000 word review, all i can do is recommend it.

A weighty tone that includes almost everything. An interesting photographic insight into a side of Tokyo life that has ended (or, at least, some would like to think so). Some of the pictures were a bit small to get any detail from but, apart from that, a very interesting volume which will take some time to go through!

Controversial?... maybe. Art?... definitely not! All this book really demonstrates is a man in his midlife crisis getting off on cheap thrills in Tokyo's red light zone. Japanese Art?...Er... I don't think so. Maybe cultural differences are good, but this is really quite tasteless and sad.
