Stephen Chow Korean style,

This review is from: Arahan [DVD] (DVD)
Arahan is a Korean martial arts comedy filled with special effects. It's basically about an unlucky traffic cop Sang-hwan (Ryoo Seung-bum - Sympathy For Mr Vengeance) who one day finds himself on the receiving end of a 'palm blast' while chasing a thief. The blast came from Eui-jin a beautiful martial artist who takes Sang-hwan back to her masters who nurse him back to health. The five Tai-Chi masters are impressed at how well Sang-hwan is recovering and at how high his Chi level is. Sang-hwan then becomes the pupil to the masters in order to learn the palm blast in the hope that it will make him a better cop. Meanwhile a powerful and vengeful Chi master awakens and seeks out the remaining five Chi masters.Ok so the movie's plot doesn't really have originality written over it. The story is just like a Stephen Chow movie where the main character starts of as a loser and a bit stupid and then by the end becomes an exceptional fighter with superhuman skills. All the other characters are there as well; the young heroine who becomes the main characters love interest, the five masters who guide and train our hero and finally the all powerful bad guy. But the plot isn't really why you watch a movie like this; we watch it for the comedy and action. The fight scenes are long, tense and well choreographed and the comedy has plenty of laugh-out-loud moments. The first half of the movie starts off as a comedy with no real big action scenes. It's not till about 50 minutes into the movie when we finally get to see the action. We are treated to about three long fight scenes, one in a restaurant, another in a warehouse and the end final fight. The end fight is the longest (about ten minutes) and has the majority of the sword fights and wirework, but it's the restaurant scene which I enjoyed the most which almost (but not quite) had a kind of Jackie Chan feel to it. The movies main accomplishment however has to be its ability to shift from a comedy to a serious tone. While most of the fights do have comic moments they can also have a dark edge to them (which is especially true for the end fight). The only thing that I didn't like about Arahan was that some of the comedy particularly early on didn't quite work which I just put down to being lost in translation. These rare occasions can be overlooked though and don't deter from the film experience. The DVD is about as good as other Optimum Asia releases with good sound and picture. There are a couple of behind the scenes documentaries, deleted scenes and a trailer (with really poor sound quality). Overall this movie does what it sets out to do; it's fun and exciting. Although not quite as good as Stephen Chows recent movies, if you want a light hearted martial arts film than this will please any fan of the genre.

Great action with a strand of humour running throughout,

Arahan is a fun movie. It takes the traditional world of martial arts and firmly plants it in the modern day. The film tells the story of an evil martial arts master attempting to take over the world, with the fate of hummanity being placed in the hands of a hapless police officer who, initially, has no idea of the power he possesses - but throughout the course of the movie is slowly brought to understand. Yet even when he finally does - he still remains a comical character. And this is what makes me like Arahan so much. The film presents us with a classic (but well told) 'good versus evil' story that has amazing martial arts action sequences, a cool villain but also a thread of humour which is present either in a very deliberate way or sometimes in just a subtle gesture. If you're a fan of great martial arts choreography with a good sense of humour thrown in, then this is the film for you!
