I'll begin by caveating this review by saying I'm a huge fan of GusGus and have travelled to see them live.
I enjoyed their previous offering "24/7" , the first release on Kompakt. I felt that was an experimental release, stretching what could be achieved with a minimal setup of (albeit rich) synth and vocals. After the initial 3 mins of catchy pop stylings each track would depart on a dark abstract techno journey. "Arabian Horse" is by contrast a return to the form of previous releases such as "Forever", and this is in no small part due to the return of Earth to provide female vocals. The skilful interweaving of the different vocalists melodies with the pumping techno beats and bass, with almost trancelike euphoric lead synths creates a potent combination. It's the same quirky, catchy experimentation I loved in previous releases. In short, this won't disappoint existing fans, and should prove a stunning intro to those not already au fait with one of icelands better kept secrets. How they are not more popular in the uk I do not know.

I am a big fan of Gusgus. I have reviewed previous albums of theirs on this website quite highly. Well, I feel as though I need to downgrade those reviews by a star or two, for this is the best Gusgus album since Polydistortion, and in some respects, is better than that stunning debut.
Listening to it is like listening to the maturation of something which began with their previous album, 24-7. That album was minimal in all senses of the word. Perhaps slightly too meandering in its song structure. This album is fully formed and beautiful - harking back to the early noughties, yet seeming very current at the same time.
The first 6 tracks are stunning and bear repeated listening. The vocals are spot on. The production is full and beautifully orchestrated. There are a couple of lulls here and there, but the quality of the highs on this album far outweigh the lows. I have previously written about the Gusgus live sound surpassing anything on their albums. They will have a hard time maintaining that with this album.

I'm a fan of Gus Gus since "Polydistorion". I loved the album and the next one "This is normal".
I don't like the "24/7" album , so the "Arabian Horse" is a nice surprise.
It's kind of dance+trance album. Would be great for a party or for a sensual evening.
*5 stars, because I'm a fan. I feel sometimes Gus Gus are not so far away from mainstream counterparts and sometimes they are almost kitsch. But still I love the music.
