Amazon.co.uk Review

While skiving off from school, Tom and Geoff make an amazing discovery--a strange vehicle that has lain hidden for centuries. It turns out to be a fantastic flying machine that can travel incredible distances and take them wherever they wish. =It can even make them invisible--what a find! The only problem is, how do they keep it a secret?

This award-winning novel (1997 Whitbread Children's Book of the Year and shortlisted for the Smarties Prize) is a fantastic adventure, full of humour, excitement and the kind of adventures children are always dreaming of. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Product Description

Two school boys out on a school trip discover a space ship. They learn to fly the ship, Aquila, and to talk Latin, the only language it understands. Through Aquila the boys not only have many adventures and a lot of fun, but they soon realise that Aquila is making a real difference to their lives.

Why I liked this book 10 Aug 2010
Format:Paperback
I liked this book because: (1) It explains the Latin proverb "A man can fly if he wishes, if he rides on the back of an eagle." What on earth does that mean? (2) The boys were bottom of the class until they were motivated to learn Latin, maths, geography, history ... (3) The teachers were funny - the thumbscrew made me laugh. (4) It's a children's book, but the characters do develop. (5) The line that an eagle can be anything - even a teacher - gave pause for thought.

I'm a teacher and my class read Aquila as a class read. I can highly recommend it. What follows is a review written by a member of my class, called Connor:

Aquila was a very good book, it was written by Andrew Norris who is an outstanding author.
The book was about two boys who went on a geography field trip. Their names are Tom and Geoff. They find a flying machine thing and nobody else knows about it... or do they?
My favourite character was Geoff because he was bottom of the class, then after that geography field trip because of the flying machine he gets a brain. The field trip was at a quarry and that's when the story really began.
The teachers are really funny. On the field trip the boys fall into a Roman centurion's cave and Geoff presses a big blue button then WHOOSH!!!!!!
THIS IS THE BEST BOOK I'VE EVER READ AND I WOULD GIVE IT 4 OUT OF 5 STARS. The book was exciting and thrilling.

T.V Series 24 Jun 2006
Format:Paperback
This is an excellent book that was adapted into a childrens television series a few years ago. Much more of the story was added to the program, explaining where it was from. Some parts where also altered and a few missadventures to pad out to, if I can remember rightly, at least 2 series, possibly 3. I thoroughly enjoyed both the book and the program. As with everything however I would always recomend reading the book to any film 1st. This way you can realy get the true story the way the author wanted it. Films and programmes always change or add to it, sometimes with disasterous consequences.
