I liked this book because: (1) It explains the Latin proverb "A man can fly if he wishes, if he rides on the back of an eagle." What on earth does that mean? (2) The boys were bottom of the class until they were motivated to learn Latin, maths, geography, history ... (3) The teachers were funny - the thumbscrew made me laugh. (4) It's a children's book, but the characters do develop. (5) The line that an eagle can be anything - even a teacher - gave pause for thought.

I'm a teacher and my class read Aquila as a class read. I can highly recommend it. What follows is a review written by a member of my class, called Connor:
Aquila was a very good book, it was written by Andrew Norris who is an outstanding author.
The book was about two boys who went on a geography field trip. Their names are Tom and Geoff. They find a flying machine thing and nobody else knows about it... or do they?
My favourite character was Geoff because he was bottom of the class, then after that geography field trip because of the flying machine he gets a brain. The field trip was at a quarry and that's when the story really began.
The teachers are really funny. On the field trip the boys fall into a Roman centurion's cave and Geoff presses a big blue button then WHOOSH!!!!!!
THIS IS THE BEST BOOK I'VE EVER READ AND I WOULD GIVE IT 4 OUT OF 5 STARS. The book was exciting and thrilling.

This is an excellent book that was adapted into a childrens television series a few years ago. Much more of the story was added to the program, explaining where it was from. Some parts where also altered and a few missadventures to pad out to, if I can remember rightly, at least 2 series, possibly 3. I thoroughly enjoyed both the book and the program. As with everything however I would always recomend reading the book to any film 1st. This way you can realy get the true story the way the author wanted it. Films and programmes always change or add to it, sometimes with disasterous consequences.

A good read - so funny!
I read this book with my two sons (aged 9 and 6)who both really enjoyed the story - at times I couldn't carry on with reading because we were laughing so much. Read more

A superb read!
Aquila is a really exciting book. My daughter (aged 8) and I read it out loud over 2 days - we were both gripped by the story. The teachers are especially funny!!
