This was bought for my husband who has many books on plants and fish for his aquarium. He hasn't put it down since Christmas Day and is very impressed by the short but precise information and photographs.
A must for beginners and experts alike.

I love this book and simply could not put it down until I had read the whole thing, It is a great informative book and would suit beginners and advanced fish keeps alike, it is very interesting and there are a lot of clear pictures in it, the whole book is a must read and very nicely presented, the pages are thick and the whole book is very comfortable to hold, it is simply a must have for all fish keepers..

I was looking for a guide to help me move up from a 10 ltr tank to a 110 ltr tank and this helped a great deal.
It informs you on all that you need to know about the set up and more importantly the problems with water quality and how to rectify them. A few other titles tell you about ammonia etc, but not how to deal with it where this does.
I like the chapters on the different types of fish but this is why it's not a 5 star as I think it could be bigger. I know there's thousands of fish to choose from and to cover them would be ridiculous, but a few more pages would have been nice.
It does cover marine aquariums, which is a specialised subject - right to touch on it as all the kids want a 'Nimo' but they won't last long in the wrong conditions. However, as it's such a special and difficult subject then maybe out of the scope for this title to cover it in as much detail.
Well presented and easy to follow, a really great start up or mid level guide.

My husband has have several fish tanks over the years so he is not new tho keep an aquarium. However, as he received a new aquarium for Christmas I decided to buy this book to help he brush up on his skills and perhaps acquire new ones. He has found the book to be very helpful and has learned many new skills and ideas. Just the job. He thinks it would be well worth buy for anyone just beginning to keep fish and indeed for the more experienced enthusiast.

I wanted to move up from a coldwater BiOrb to a tropical tank & the only book I had was a pocket sized book on goldfish. I knew Haynes manuals from the old days & knew they'd branched out into other stuff, so I thought I'd give it a try.

It's an excellent starter manual, telling you about the different types of fish, tanks, filters, media etc. It's explains how to set up your first tank, including how to plant if you fancy doing that. The writing is easy - I've read too many books about cycling the tank & you need a phd in biology to understand them. This keeps it simple.

It explains about fish characteristics, what will work with what, which fish you shouldn't mix. it also tells you about other aquatic life, shrimps, frogs, snails etc.

The one thing which I thought was not particularly useful was the section on marine set-ups. To me, marines are another league, & the small section of this book wouldn't even scratch the suface. This is a book aimed at novices, & I don't know any novice who'd leap straight into a marine set-up. Personally, I'll never feel confident enough to go marine. The only reason I can see for including this section is to whet your appetite.

For someone who wants to start off on the hobby & knows nothing, this is a good a place as any to start. I'm giving five stars as I still pick it up & leaf through it now.

I have found this book to be very useful for advice in looking after my aquarium. I wish I had known about it when I first set up my aquarium, which is when it would be most useful.

If you are considering starting an aquarium it would be a good idea to get this book as it is quite a complex process to get an aquarium ready for fish and then keep them healthy. If you already have an aquarium this book won't be as useful but is still a good buy. It does have many types of fish listed so will be helpful if you need to choose new fish that will mix well with your current fish. It also explains how to overcome many of the problems that may arise such as an ill fish or problems with ongoing maintenance.

This book covers the three types of aquarium fish: coldwater, tropical and marine. It also has information about the various types of aquarium plants.

I bought this book to learn about tropical fish before jumping head first into buying a tank and fish without understanding what was required. The book was recommended to me and I was not disappointed. The book gave me all the information I needed and is at hand to refer to as I go along.

An almost comprehensive guide to setting up an aquarium. To make it 5 stars I would have liked a comprehensive listing of fish and more guidance about compatibility of species in a community tank.
Perhaps a second volume would be necessary.
