Dracula called and said he's coming over tonight, 23 Oct 2005
Aqua Teen Hunger Force is probably the funniest cartoon comedy I've ever seen. These DVDs tell the story of three food items - Frylock, a box of frenchfies who is pretty much the intelligent, old brother who is responsible for keeping the other two in check, as well as driving the plots forward. Master Shake, the incredibly silly and self-important milkshake who believes he is in charge but really is responsible for causing enormous amounts of sillyness, and, finally, Meatwad, who is like the little brother, he looks up to shake even though he treats him terribly. The teens start out as super hero detectives, but that was mostly just an edge so the network fatcats would understand what the show is about during the pitch, they are only actually detectives in the pilot. Later episodes see them tracking aliens to find a PDA, going on holiday to Memphis to find dracula's grave, trying to cash a giant radioactive cheque and spending huge amounts of time just sitting around in their neighbour's pool. While all manner of insane things happens to them. The humour is highly alternative and incredibly funny. It's a show that's difficult to quote because often the humour is so contextual that quotes don't even make sense (and the show doesn't really make sense either!). In one episode for instance, the ghost of Christmas past (who happens to be a robot from the future), comes to visit the Teens' hapless neighbour, Carl, to tell him about Christmas. The Cybernetic Ghost of Christmas Past from the Future goes on to tell us that a great red ape named Sir Santa of Claws started Christmas, thousands of years ago, after enslaving a highly advanced race of elves from the red planet. Forcing the elfin slaves to make toys which were then thrown at predators. It's all so wacky and madcap that it could've ended up coming across as, well, just stupid. But the scripts are so sharp and the voice acting is simply fantastic and it's all just so incredibly funny. There's also a huge cast of supporting characters, such as the Mooninites, two hilariously written characters who are pretty much two dimensional (literally) space-invaders-like squares from the moon who drink and smoke and steal and encourage violence and drug use and are just incredibly funny and enjoyable characters. Or another alien race, The Plutonians who want to conquer the earth and are, well, just too stupid. One of them is a perpetually angry German alien from Pluto and the other a sort of laid-back casual American. From Pluto. The two are a joy to experience and make stupid funny again. Other characters include Dr Weird, an insane scientist type who features in short intros before the opening credits and a giant nappy-and-shower cap wearing rapping spider who wants to drill to the centre of the earth to release demons to run his global diet pill pyramid scheme. Words don't do it justice. This pack contains the first 3 volumes which have around 13 episodes each, each lasting 10 minutes. So there's about 6 hours of footage on the discs, as well as some great extras like deleted scenes and the obligatory audio commentary. If you enjoy humour which is one half intelligent, one half inane and three halves hilarious, buy this right now. The digital ruler commands it.
