Biography

Lucidity is the impressive debut album of Delain, a unique gothic rock project initiated by (ex-Within Temptation) keyboardist Martijn Westerholt. He surrounded himself with a number of extremely talented musicians such as Finnish bassist Marko Hielata (Nightwish, Tarot), guitarist Jan Yrlund (ex-Lacrimosa) and Norwegian vocalist Liv Kristine (ex-Theatre of Tragedy, Leaves’ Eyes).

April Rain is by far and away the best album I've heard in a long time. I discovered Delain on a compilation album, Beautiful Voices 3, and was inspired on the strength of two songs, one audio the other video, to purchase Lucidity which quickly established itself as my favourite album in 2008. Its Within Tempation heritage and influence blended with Nightwish inspired tones was a solid foundation onto which they built their own style and with great success. April Rain doesn't suffer from second album syndrome and for me totally eclipses its predecessor.

Musically this is a more ambitious, complex, multi layered affair than Lucidity and on the whole is almost pure Delain though I heard a tiny Lcuna Coil influence in Stay Forever and a bit of Jethro Tull in Start Swimming but that's no bad thing. It is a superbly balanced sounding album, soaring up and down, perfectly blending hard rock with orchestration notably some haunting cello notes and some calms within this tempestuous storm of an album. Charlotte Wessels vocals are more confident with a greater range of ability on display and a timbre to her voice that was evident in Lucidty but is overtly on display here. Lyrically this is a more poetic and prophetic collection of songs than before. If I had to pick one track that perfectly encapsulates almost everthing this album has to offer it would be I'll Reach You.

I can't fault this album and it has elevated Delain to the status of my favourite group knocking Within Temptation into second place. This is perfection.

If you're into gothic symphonic rock and are new to Delain, you'll probably like this. Now a full band, Delain was originally a project started by Martijn Westerholt, brother of Robert from Within Temptation. But if you're already a fan and familiar with the debut CD Lucidity, prepare yourself for a shock.

For April Rain Martijn has taken a step back and allowed the other band members to contribute more. The result is something that sounds more like a straightforward rock band and is not as adventurous as Lucidity. Marco from Nightwish is the only guest vocalist this time round although he does a good job on two of the best tracks. Without him I think it would sound a bit dull, surprisingly despite the great vocals of Charlotte Wessels.

The only track here that would not sound out of place on Lucidity is the title song. I think it's unfair to compare the two CDs though because of the different approach taken. It's better to judge them on their own merits, and what we have here is a pretty solid rock album which should appeal to fans of the genre. Just treat this as a different band to that which made Lucidity.

The Silent Force by Within Temptation is one of my favourite albums, so when I saw Delain mentioned in comparison, I was intruiged to check out their debut. Plenty of promise, but only the track Frozen really hits home. So when April Rain was released I was interested to see if things have changed. And they have! The song writing, playing, vocals and arrangements have all taken a massive leap forwards. Every song with the exception of Go Away is a 5 star winner, even the bonus Come Closer. From bombastic rockers to sweet ballads, they carry it all off with supreme style. There is much here to interest the prog fan, especially if Everon and Threshold are to taste.

WOW!
Heard the title track on a sampler CD. Read the positive write up, bought it. Approached with open mind as to content as the 'sample' track may have been a one off. Read more

Awesome album. Must buy if you like female led rock bands
Have quite a lot of symphonic metal albums and this is easily one of the best recent examples. Rarely do I find an album where I like every track and this one of those albums. Read more
