This is my first Count Basie album, everyone say awwww! I have heard a lot of new jazz over the last 6 months thanks to the local library having a great jazz section. I bought any that really took my fancy, this being amongst the first.
It is an absolute aural treat, the band swing like a steam hammer, tight and righteous, yet sensitive and nimble responding to the music as one. It must have been amazing to have seen bands such as this in concert as they were musicians who really got the best of any tunes they were asked to perform. Count Basie certainly got things moving in the right direction with the right crew.
Verve really know how to get the best out of the original tapes as this cd sounds like it was recorded last week, rather than decades ago. It has that 40's 50's sound, but everything is there and is wonderfully balanced, soloists being really easy to follow, the drums keeping the beat moving on without aggression or brute force, the bass beating like a heart. Outstanding remastering.
The sleeve is also a work of art and love. It really captures the period and the liner notes are most informative. They certainly helped fill in a lot of gaps in my knowledge.
Anyone who has any interest in the sound of a cracking band being led by a leader who had vision ought to get hold of this album and just get lost in the music. Fully recommended!

April In Paris: Count Basie and his Orchestra - What am I here for? The fine music, that's what!

Recorded in 1955/6, some 20 years after his breakthrough, this was one of the high points of the career of Basie and his orchestra. Though they were missing the creative genius of the likes of Lester Young, which had helped to make their name, the outfit was still a tight playing unit, perfectly in sync with each other. Rooted in the tradition of big band swing (which they helped to define, so why not?) with elements of the modern styles that were coming in, this is an almost perfect album. Packed full of swinging tunes, the record fairly bursts with energy. It's a perfect listen, full of vitality, fresh takes on old tunes, exciting new material, vim and vigour. Recommended to any swing/jazz lover.

I was fortunate to see this wonderful band twice at the Free Trade Hall in Manchester--Words cannot describe just how good the Basie band was and this master recording is Fabulous.Thanks to all concerned.
